I think there was confusion about the 'retention' hang-up that, mostly, was just about the value the Flames have placed on retention, not that they wouldn't.

That's complete crap.
And both could be true in what they're saying for negotiating purposes.
But these same guys have come out and said Calgary wouldn't retain which has been blown out of the water since.

I'm less concerned with the reason and more troubled that they wouldn't let Conroy complete a trade he thought was in the best interests of the club.
Who knows if that is what happened but that does seem to sync up with what Markstrom said publicly.

Yeah, Devils aren't selling so much as saving some value on a player they can't re-sign (at his asking price) and with Hughes back it's not like they lack offence.
