We don't know the circumstances, we do know that in the past the Flames has a tendency to let players walk. Where would this team be if we had gotten a first for Brodie and Gaudreau. We got nothing for them yet some are rambling about Conroy not getting a kings ransom. If we look at the whole body of work, he did better than a lot of people expected while trying to navigate a number of challenges. He couldn't sign a player who had limited destinations which was more hampered by teams that didn't have a first to offer. He still had to negotiate with these teams while they had a leg up They got a player they wanted and a first, let's look at his whole body of work and cut Conroy some slack. Treliving never got roasted this much for letting guys walk.

Vegas should get in on Guentzel with that other first if they want to ensure they can rebound and have a good run here.

A big body, who skates well.
Heaps of pro experience at a young age over seas.
Entering his prime as a D man 26-27 years old.
Right Shot.
Produces heaps of offense in the AHL.
Familiarity with two roster players.
Briming with confidence.

True story - although Florida just signed a defenseman they claimed off waivers to an 8 year deal (Forsling)

They should've asked for a prospect. Even if you're lukewarm on Vegas' system, pick one put another bullet in the chamber. That's what these trades are all about.

off the top of my head:
Giordano
Weegar
Tanev
Forsling
Marino
All these guys were buried as tweeners or waiver fodder at one point and have become fixture top 4 or better pieces. I'm sure there are many more examples.

Hanifin was the Flames 4th best/most important D the past few seasons IMO
He stunk in the playoff series vs Edmonton - STUNK
He has never show any ability to lead a top D pairing or play against the best competition another team has
He is an ideal 3/4 second pairing on a competitive playoff team and a UFA
Maybe teams just didn’t care as much as we thought for “the best available D on the market “

You could even add a guy like Devon Toews.

Hanifin himself isn’t even a foundational piece.
I don’t love the deal. I think the Flames probably would have had a better market when both sides walked away from the original deal that was on the table. The return might have been stronger at that point but he didn’t know that Hanifin would remove a bunch of his leverage with days left to make the deal.
It is what it is. Conroy couldn’t force a team to give more and I know he wouldn’t have taken what he thought was the second best offer. A deal had to be made and it was.

Well if they're not dealing Markstrom at the deadline just please try to get something for Vladar. Not really hopeful of that at the moment though, it's looking more likely we'll see Mang dealt at this point.

Miromanov went from toss in to centerpiece in a hurry, eh? Now anyone calling out this complete 180 are getting attacked.
Guys, Conroy did his best, ok? That's all we can expect. And Big Brain Nonis signed off on it. So it must be a good return.
So let's stop analyzing and just enjoy our regularly scheduled enemas.
Conroy: Can I have Edstrom?
McCrimmon: No.
Conroy: Can I have Brisson?
McCrimmon: No.
Conroy: Can I have Cormier?
McCrimmon: No.
Conroy: Can I have Cataford?
McCrimmon: No.
Conroy: Can I have Miromanov?
McCrimmon: Who? Let me call you back.
(five hours later)
McCrimmon: My team tells me that is a player. So sure. You have a deal. Under two conditions...

Only player on your list that was waived is Forsling. None of the other players were ever on waivers.

I'm hoping Miromanov has a great season and becomes a tradeable asset next deadline. Similar with Kuzmenko and Sharangovich, I think Conroy is targeting guys like this in deals cause they have potential to keep on giving and tip the scales in Conroy's favor.

Nieuwendyk was a special player. He was a huge part of Dallas winning the cup in 1999, and that's why they traded Iginla. It was also in the pre-salary cap era where ELCs weren't nearly as important.
Hanifin is not a Niewendyk. ELCs are gold in the salary cap era. If the Stars are concerned about giving up
