I'm asking because I was under the impression that a retool would mean you have structure but you're just adding pieces to that to make it better but with this team we don't really have a structure we don't have a center we don't have a elite player so are we just trying to add to an existing team or are we going to rebuild it from scratch?

Does it matter what you label it? 'Rebuild'/'retool' are completely interpretive buzzwords that make me roll my eyes at this point. It is what it is, they are recouping assets for the long-term.

I'd be pretty miffed if OK didn't play very fairly with the Flames. I mean, if Conroy really lowballed him, sure. But his market value is very uncertain anyway. He'd be really rolling the dice to test it. I suspect he wouldn't get more than a one year deal on the market and he can at least get some term here.

Huberdeau, Kadri, Weegar, Andersson, and Kylington are here to stay. Include guys like Zary, Coronato, Pospisil, etc, and it’s pretty clearly no position to start from scratch. Whatever you call it, the goal is to add to what we have through the draft and get younger.

Given the value of dman being traded, let's say Miromanov could fetch a 3rd+5th (similar to Edmundson, Zadorov, others).
I know it might not make people feel better, but then the deal ends up becoming:
1st + 2 3rds (one of them can be 2nd) + 5th for Hanifin.
Let's say 1st + 2nd + 3rd + 5th for Hanifin ... how would have people felt about that?

Also probably explains why Florida never really became players in Hanifin.
If Forsling or Montour had unrealistic salary expectations then maybe you look at Hanifin for $7M
But if Forsling wants $5.75M, you know he's a fit, why go get Hanifin just to have to pay him more and hope he fits your system as well.

That's fair I was just under the impression that he would have said a rebuild because we need a structure to build on top of before we can add the pieces that make the team competitive

I dont give him a dime more than his current deal.
I mean, this club just paid him for a year and a half when he never played a minute for them.
Obviously it was the right thing to do, but now its time for him to give some payback to the organization that clearly had his back.

I think GM's avoid the word 'rebuild' because some owners and fans associate that with 'trying to lose', which can make it harder to sell tickets.

He should take a deal when we are rebuilding and do not need the cap space and then try to maximize his earnings when we are competitive.

To be honest, I was thinking that he should sign a 1-yr prove it/pay back deal for 1.5MM.

Even though tmr is the trade deadline, do pending UFAs have until the same deadline to sign an extension? Or can they sign any time before July 1?

Forsling went from waivers acquisition to 8 year $46 million deal. Incredible to get a top 4 D-man off waivers

It's a rebuild, Calgary has basically traded every trade-able asset at this point (while still being able to field a somewhat competent lineup) or is linked to rumours about trading them, with largely prospects and picks coming back.

My thoughts exactly.
At this point I would be concerned If they held onto Markström. Let's just get this thing underway and stop beating around the bush.

So OK has plenty of time to sign an extension. I have no doubt it will get done

Really hoping to see some Markstrom movement, outside of that the flames are likely done unless a Mangi curveball is thrown.
