The philosophy is simple. Markstrom has value now (presumably) but holds no value in a few years when we want to compete again. Cash his value now to kill multiple birds with one stone. The throwing Wolf to the wolves is a concern though. They have to have some young d in place to ensure he’s not completely hung out to dry. Plus I think they should pair him with a vet to take 50% of games.

Generally it seems like it is widely believed that he is pretty loyal to the Flames and just a matter of time before a deal is signed.

Solovyov, Grushnikov and possibly Poirier are going to be pushing for spots as well. I mean if nothing else it will be musical chairs for slots 4-6 for a few months and then the cream should start rising to the top. Hopefully anyway.

Defense isn’t that bad off. It’s also telling that Conroy has targeted some very defensive defensemen. That speaks volumes in my opinion, they are preparing to buckle down and defend in their own end a lot. Pahal has been exceptional, not Tanev level but really good. Shilly just got back and isn’t a far off replacement to Hanifin. Compared to after the Zadorov trade, is our D really that much worse off?

Grushnikov is probably the best D with the Wranglers right now, at least with Poirier being so rusty.
I'd expect him to push for a spot as well.

I feel like it's the end of summer camp now that the UFAs are all dealt with. (minus OK but I'm sure he's coming back)

I also wonder if the Flames and Tanev reunite in the off season.
Weegar / Raz
Shilly / Tanev
Grush / Miro / Pachal

I really doubt it, he wants to win a cup and knows the Flames are retooling for the next few years. Time to move on

the Kings placed Jacob Moverare on waivers yesterday, but also signed him to a two year contract, $775K AAV. Would be funny if Conroy kept collecting waived defencemen.

Well, yesterday was fun. Until it wasn't. How's everyone doing?
wrt Wolf, I think this season has made clear that facing AHL shooters is doing exactly nothing for him. He needs to face NHL shooters if he's going to progress. And if his confidence is so fragile that he'll be irreparably damaged by getting lit up a few times, he'll never make it anyway.
As long as he isn't just handed the starter's reins, sink or swim baby.

Taking a while to get to 5000

If Friedman is to be believed, the Sens will likely overpay for Tanev in the summer.

In the interview Conroy did on the flames website and YouTube, he said it's a Retooling.
Is this a rebuild or a re tool?
I'm asking because I was under the impression that a retool would mean you have structure but you're just adding pieces to that to make it better but with this team we don't really have a structure we don't have a center we don't have a elite player so are we just trying to add to an existing team or are we going to rebuild it from scratch?
