It's the right direction, I just don't know how effectively they can put together the next core with where they're picking without some masterful scouting to find players who can project to be meaningful NHLers.
Too bad he hasn't been able to finagle that young NHL center. But maybe that's coming. Clearly we had to adjust expectations around here.
If Markstrom gets moved between now and the summer we are looking at a bottom 10, possibly bottom 5 team next season. There's a good chance post deadline that this team drops into the top 8 range of the draft which is a good start to get a quality player. Then next season they should be picking in the same range and possibly top 5. I think things are setting up nicely especially if they can hit on some of these accumulated picks from other teams.
That's why they should have tried to sell last year a bit.
For whatever reason last year the entire Eastern Conference lost their mind leading up to the deadline.
Boston, Toronto, Rangers. Tampa, New Jersey, and others all gave up lots of future assets.
Problem is none of those teams won the cup, most didn't win even make the conference finals, and now all those teams have no assets and are being gunshy.
It hasn't really been talked about but I don't think an Eastern Conference team has moved a first yet this year.
They did try and sell last year, but there was a general lack of cap space and few wanted to move 2023 draft picks. The dream of getting Columbus’ early draft pick etc. was just that, a dream.

That was in the offseason.
I meant being willing to move guys with retention going back to last deadline when the Eastern Conference was in a full blown arms race.
Thing is last year in the East the two teams that did nothing (Florida and Carolina) were the ones that made the Eastern Conference finals, so they all burned pucks for nothing and have fewer assets this year while also feeling burned by last year.
The highest pick an Eastern Conference team has moved this year is a 2nd for Wennberg.
Don’t hate it don’t love it. People’s expectations recently have been insane and the level of freak out has been comical. Could make a reality tv show out of this.
The first pick is interesting, it’s best to hope for the 2026 scenario and have Vegas really regress making it a potential lottery pick.

Because of Conroy's eye for talent, I do have to say that I'm intrigued by Miromanov. The prospect reports make it sound like Miromanov has a lot of unmined potential.
Sean Walker got an unprotected first.
Both Hanifin and Tanev didn’t.
Lindholm got more than both D combined.
Absolutely crazy.
Sean Walker most certainly did not get an unprotected first. But it probably makes more sense with the narrative you want if we say he did. Philly did not even get any compensation if the pick slides.
Are the same people saying this is a **** return the same ones that said Conroy got boned with the Toffoli deal? Guess some of you like the taste of crow.
No. I liked the Toffoli return, but I do find this trade to be a bit weak. I would have obviously preferred it if the Flames also got a prospect.
Here's how I felt about the trades:
Toffoli: I really liked the trade and love it now
Zadorov: I've warmed up to it, but was not a fan at first (mostly due to the 3rd being in 2026)
Lindholm: I love the return
Tanev: I like what Conroy did and I love the style of defender the Flames got
Hanifin: I hoped the return would be a 1st, good prospect, conditional 3rd or 4th, and player (for cap purposes)
It's okay for people to be a bit disappointed and it's silly that many in here are trying to police how everyone should feel (not saying you are). I'm sure posters who disliked the Iginla trade at first were also told the return was fine. This could work out, but most media and most people that are not Flames fans are in agreement that Vegas won this trade at first glance. Also, this trade does not sour me on Conroy at all. I think he has been a wonderful GM so far and is taking this team in the direction it needs.
I'm not going to judge or tell people who like this trade that they should be angry. Everyone had their own expectations, and some of those like my own were probably too high. I guess I'm now cheering for Tanev to win the west and Hanifin to win a round haha.
Monahan returned a 1st. Freaking 34 year oldAdam Henrique returned a 1st.
I think Conroy just isn’t very good at this. His trade returns have been largely underwhelming. This one is particularly brutal. Like even Jay Feaster did better than this.
That's a pretty snappy judgement for a new general manager in a set market with players he has to move.
If GM X decides to move a player with term to make his team better but makes it worse ... it's easy to judge. He wasn't forced to make a move. He made his team worse than it was.
But a GM having to move assets in a market defined by supply, demand, cap space, and in this instance an agent that eliminates 90% of the trade pool I think that's a silly judgement.
Unless you are thinking other teams offered way more and Conroy was to stupid to recognize a better package.

Ryan Leslie on the Fan just now: Tampa. It was just Tampa, in terms of the only team he would sign an extension with.
So, in terms of trading, this likely needs to be looked as trading a rental.
The time to trade Noah to maximize return was 2022, when Johnny and Chucky left.
It didn't happen, and as time progressed Noah gained trade control and likely narrowed his view of where he'd sign.
This Noah Hanifin situation is no different than the Jarome Iginla situation (if you take the emotional attachment to Iggy out). The Flames kept the asset and spun their tires in irrelevancy beyond the logical jumping off point.
That is to say that if you're upset with the Hanifin return, then perhaps you should start thinking it's time to trade Rasmus Andersson now/this Summer when there's term left on his contract so we don't have to get tied to whether or not he'll re-sign where we're trading him. Extract value from the term remaining.
