Vegas with another year of circumventing the cap. The league needs to do something about it.
But not anytime soon.
Wait until the Oilers’ cup window closes. Then do so something about it.
The Hanifin return is just fine if he’s a rental.

At the time of the trade, Tippett was a 23-year-old winger who had never scored more than 20 points in an NHL season. His draft pedigree was irrelevant at that point.

Don’t really care where he was drafted. He was traded four years after he was drafted and was barely on the roster.

You are missing 3 pieces that went with Giroux just to be fair.

With conny saying they're still looking at things I can't help bit wonder if he's trying to tear it all down and really set up the suck for next year just to protect their own 1st round pick.

Yeah, I was thinking that, too. Retention cost is based on full year or multi year retention. March to April retention at the deadline is just necessary to make deals with contenders, as most are down to pennies in cap space.

This we can agree on. He's not a hot commodity. Neither Florida team would pay up. One of those teams think they can get him as UFA.

Already done. I don't see this roster finishing outside the bottom 10 this year, let alone next year.

Chychrun went for a first and two seconds.
Hronek + a 4th went for a first and a second.
Hanifin went for a first, a third(which could easily be a 2nd) and a depth D.
Chychrun & Hronek are younger & were traded with term. Hanifin is a rental.
This will help me sleep better 2night

Montreal gets the higher pick we own next year out of ours and Florida’s unless ours is in the top 10. If it is they are forced to take Florida’s pick.
Basically if we finish with the 11th pick next year it’s a bit of a disaster.

Tippett is the kind of player you specifically target because you're pretty sure he's going to pop given a change in scenery. Basically a Sam Bennett at the time of the trade.
I won't argue that top prospects don't get traded for rentals often. But if you're the best on the market, you'd expect to get a little more than what we got.

We also traded a 1st and 2 2nds for an RFA Hamilton.
Not a home run trade by any means but pretty damn close to market value.

The rest of this year and next year would be a good time to take a sabbatical from watching NHL hockey.

Exactly. Not every GM is a moron that's giving up a high end prospect like Filip Forsberg at the deadline (there was no pick in that trade fwiw).

Either be really good and we're giving away one of the picks 20-32, assuming Florida will be in a similar spot, or be really bad (1-10). Can not be 11-16 or it's going to be painful.

He could also be a buyer for the right player.
However acheivied, and it's less likely this next couple years (mini rebuild, wait for new arena) that there will be a big name UFA attraction, acquisitions are likely to be made more through trade then UFA.
And, in October this team will look better on paper than the one they're putting out tomorrow night in Tampa. Sure, they have the offseason but they also have the ability to get someone for a good price in the next two days that some team may be forced to shed for other reasons.
Flames also have a Vladar/Wolf issue next year which also can be dealt with in the next 37 hours.

You know who else was a former 1st-round pick that a team traded for because they were pretty sure he would pop given a change of scenery?
Curtis Lazar.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Nobody knows for sure until it happens.

A defence man coming off a torn ACL and a conditional 1st for Noah Hanifin is not okay.
