You can slice or dice it however you want, this this is a very underwhelming return for a player of Hanifins age, quality , and salary.
Okay well I see you’re slicing it all the way up into a make believe return.

Him not wanting to sign here was always going to be a loss. He was worth more to us than in a trade.

I wonder what the "cost of retention" was here?

Yeah that's me too. Or another 2nd/3rd rounder or something.

Hanifin was the best defenseman available, a perfect age and durable as hell. It is a great addition for Vegas.

The past offseason was terrible. Blame Tre for doing nothing last offseason.

What else do you want? Good job Conman
Just a very high top 3ish Draft pick or two at some point.

Treliving was gone last offseason, and in case you've forgotten, that's when Conroy traded Toffoli and everyone chewed him out for getting a useless plug like Sharangovich.

Who cares about when the 1st is the later the better IMO.

The prospect part is what sucks.

The third I guess. I think it’s light by a pick or prospect as well

Yeah. Meant deadline like I said previously. The part offseason sucked. The window was the previous deadline

Calling it a third is really bad vibes Flames fans…. Come on now… they just need to win round 1 and it’s a second. And, it’s probably you know who.

I guess that is the greatest double win, we get to cheer for the downfall of emonton and a better pick. I love cheering against them.

It will depend on how Vegas handles free agency over the next few years. They do have the advantage of being a highly desired market. I could see them benefitting from the Marian Hossa-style retirement of Stone as early as the end of next season just in time to open up cap space to sign Draisaitl in the 2025 offseason - which would be funny cause it would anger oiler fans to no end.

However, they also have little to no prospects or picks to supplement their team with young, cheap talent over the next few seasons so it’s also possible we see a drop off as their core players get older.

Well, after listening to Conroy, I don't feel too bad about the return now.

This thread has been an epic ride. Lots of fun, and plenty of angst of course, lol.

It’ll be funny when they continue their slide and miss the playoffs

It’s becoming so necessary for retention to happen in order for a trade to happen that I think the it’s just considered to be the cost of doing business for a rental player… I don’t think there is much return in exchange for retaining salary. If a team refuses to retain this close to the deadline, it takes potential trade partners out of the running.
