Can compare this trade with giving up a first rounder with Monahan. I feel sick even thinking about this.

Where is the third team and what's going on with that? Still a little confused.

Ok, I am over it. Have to stay positive and take the positives out of it. We are moving in a new direction and the deal is what it is. Still exciting times to be a Flames fan

Don’t think Vegas was the only team interested. Sometimes you just need to dig your feet in and wait it out. Pulling the trigger early is a good way to start getting walked on by other gm’s. Deadline isn’t till Friday afternoon, buyers get desperate too.

It’s first based on how they trade their 1sts in 24 and 25. Vegas has full optionality and didn’t pay for it. It’s not much of difference but I feel like the Flame should have got a 4th or something if the pick slid

This trade was bad, there's no way to sugar-coat it. When you don't get more for Hanifin as Anaheim got for rental Henrique and barely more than Philly did for rental Walker, you didn't do very well.
Yes, Conroy's hands were tied. You can blame Tre for giving Hanifin a NMC, blame Brisson for tampering, or whatever. But at the end of the day, an experienced agent and other GMs took advantage of a rookie GM. An experienced GM would never allow an agent to meddle like this, have all sorts of info leaked about where Hanifin wants to go, etc. I can't see any other GM allowing the kind of noise around this team as we've seen recently. We've been praising Conroy for holding steady, but honestly, a bunch of experienced hockey people just outwaited him and exerted outside pressure until all Conroy could do was accept the best pile of crap from the crap basket.
That said, I'm glad we got at least something for Noah. I maintain the opinion that the best way to build a sustainable winner is through the draft, and the best way to get high draft picks is by being an awful team. Hoping for Vegas to tank in 2026 is a pipe dream. Having a compete #### team ourselves is the best route to go, and we are well on our way. Team Tank is finally going to win here.
I really like Conroy as a human being and also as a GM. He's the kind of persuasive personality that's finally convinced ownership to rebuild. I'm thrilled about that. And if finally, this allows us to bottom out and draft a few top-3 players, I consider that a win.
But there's very little to praise Conroy about this specific trade. We got what we got and I'll take it, but it's not good. I strongly disagree with anyone trying to spin this trade as a win for us.

Steinberg just said Conroy is not going to be available again until after the TDL hits.
Pat speculates more is happening…?

Because when the best D man is still there and it is crunch time that is when you get the best return. There would definitely still be a market for Noah Hanifin on Friday.

But then executing the option favours the Flames… if they do well this year, we get a 2nd. If they are doing well next year, they’ll push and likely trade their first…. We want both of those to happen…

If they trade the 25 pick in the next 48 hours, the 26 belongs to Calgary.
If they don’t trade it, and it ends up being top 10, the 26 belongs to Calgary.
That’s how I’m interpreting it.

I doubt waiting would have made a difference. They’ve been shopping him for some time and with the agents behind the scenes maneuvering this is probably as good as it gets. Looking at the return, you got to assume Vegas had the best package in place. The deal looks acceptable if hanafin is a rental.

I think there were more then a few teams in on Hanifin as a pure rental. Vegas got in the mix because it was a team he rumored to maybe sign long term with.
Because of that complication and how much the players side was pushing to chat with teams interested in signing long term, it steered the Flames to Vegas it appears (and Tampa and Fla) and seemingly that got Conroy sucked into dealing only with them, presumably because he thought he could get more for an extended Hanifin.
But NJ was in on him, and others and Flames had no obligation to explore places where he could extend, and could've traded him to 23 other teams, technically.

Time crunch and opponents getting better creates desperate teams. New bidders can show up, and ongoing ones can improve their offers. Why on earth do this now, today!?
This is why the defenders of this trade throwing shade at the rest of us are embarrassing themselves by deluding themselves into liking it, solely because "there could not have been a better offer"
Maybe as of right now. But that doesn't account for the additional two days of mounting pressure and what could've come of it.
|
The argument that the market wasn't there is BS. There is never a market until you create one. Leverage teams against each other. Work collaboratively with the player and agent to avoid them working against you. Try and group the trades closer together to avoid discontent. The entire situation was mismanaged.

Who's excited to see all the new Dmen? Is it weird that I kind of am? Hopefully a couple pop. Lord knows there is a lot of opportunity there now.

I think he got what, or atleast very close to what he wanted. He got this done so he can chip away on a Markstrom trade now

A lot of people wanted a rebuild.
- all old UFAs are gone
- we received serviceable younger players in return
- we received a ton of draft picks
- the team is playing better now than at the start of the year.
- we’re going to have a ton of cap space in the summer
What else do you want? Good job Conman
