I hope the 1st slides to 2026 and ends up being McKenna. Sure, it's not.likely but Vegas ain't a team made up of spring chickens. They could fall apart quickly especially with some of their best players held together with duct tape and a weak prospect pool.

...it's the only path forward, and we will not Oiler-it-up while doing it.
We'll actually hit on our 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th round picks at a decent clip and build proper organizational depth.
Just saying, lets depend on Vancouvers 24 playoffs (bump that pick down to mid 20s), 25 Florida, 26 Vegas and whoever gives us their first for Markstrom to do the sucking here. Why do the Flames have to be the ones who suck.
They've got a respectable signed core, if not somewhat under preforming the past few years. They've got an above average rookie class this year. They've got a hand full of new blood in the roster that may not be blue chip but seems to be fully ripened. They've got a stud AHL goalie that just needs some NHL confidence. And they have cap space. They may not be good next year but I see no reason to beleive they will be terrible.

How does he know this is the best he could get when there is still a little under 48 hrs away from the deadline? This feels like a deal made because he was scared to wait until Friday.
He's been talking to Hanifin suitors for weeks and even months. I'm sure Conroy and his team of execs have a pretty good idea whether or not the offers would get any better or not.

For all we know, maybe it was Conny who asked Vegas to add these conditions as his pro scouts confirmed that 2026 draft looks to be stronger than the 2025 one.
2026 unprotected 1st.
Maybe he should do the same with NJ. Ask for a 2026 1st unprotected for Marky this summer.
Then you would have at least 3 1st round picks for McKenna, Roobroeck, Joe Iginla
The conditions are what really chaps my ass. Just brutal.
And those who are pumping the tires on the 'pool' of assets returned collectively over a number of trades are too scared fo admit when a spade is a spade - this is a bad deal.
I mean why can't this be done on Friday? What defendant of Janafins caliber was available this week for a playoff run?
Make them sweat. Conroy blinked first IMO.
The problem is the teams interested didn't have 1sts.
Tampa: No 2024 or 2025 pick
Florida: No 2024 or 2025 pick
So right away you are a looking at a 2026 pick.
So then you have Vegas come along with a potential 2025 pick or unprotected 2026 pick. And you may believe they are closer to the end of their window than Florida. Tampa I could see being a toss up.
So now you have Vegas giving you something you covet in that first. You can try to wait it out for a different offer, but where is that going to come from? He would have a sense of interest from teams.
And you probably also know that Vegas is sending a clear signal that they intend to make a move. So if you wait too long and they do - you are back to inferior deals from Tampa or Florida.
Lots of dynamics in play but I suspect something like the above is how this played out.

Knowing the result of this trade, I'd have liked a 1st back for Tanev, if there was a suitor not named Edmonton (i.e. the Johansen + 1st rumoured from Colorado)
A first rounder in 2024 without conditions is one thing (and arguably has some present value)... one in 2026 is a total other thing unless Vegas craters out, which is unlikely.
No way the Flames are big game hunting for high end players that they would trade a 1st rounder for by 2026.
Even if that is a decent mid round pick in 2026, that player isn't helping the Flames till 2030. This piece really may not help a retool/rebuild to be competitive for the new arena and that makes this a huge loss in my eyes. If Miromanov doesn't at least turn out to be a 5/6 guy, that's a lot of nothing for Hanifin before 2027. The hype on him feels Feaster-esque.
I'm starting to think that we're in for a very long rebuild. Tough to spin it, this trade was an L, pending some amazing developments.
My point was, Connie won the Toffoli trade and he won the Lindy trade.
Let's take a deep breath and give this one a chance to play out before jumping to conclusions.
Zadorov and Tanev trades were alright too. Tanev got back two 2nds of value which seems to be market price given Walker got back what amounts to one 2nd of value given the cap dump that came with the 1st.
It's really only this trade that makes me scratch my head a bit simply because there's still two days until the deadline. I don't see the rush given what the offer ended up being. I also think grinding to get rid of the condition on the 3rd for example over two days is still worth it.
The deal doesn't blow your socks off so what was the rush? I figured finalizing the Tanev deal earlier meant that this one would go down to the wire.
Actually reminds me a lot of the return for Debrincat...which was a very similar situation where the players agent made it know exactly where he wanted to be, was a UFA after this season, and Ottawa had little leverage.
Debrincat returned a Conditional 2024 1st, 4th, and Kubalik
Hanifin returned a Conditional 2025 1st, Conditional 3rd, and Miromanov
Not that different TBH
