You know, I've seen a lot of movies, watched a lot of documentaries, seen a lot of pictures in books, read a lot of books, etc, that covered the camps in WWII, but I don't know that ANY of that has affected me in the way that episode 9 in Band of Brothers has. My daughter watched it with me and we are both still weeping. I don't know what was so different about this in comparison to everything else, but it was.

The things we do to each other...

IMO given how terrible chinook imax is, laser ultra or avx are far superior to imax. We don’t have a truly worthy imax theatre in Calgary. Laser ultra with its huge, but not imax huge, screen plus Dolby atmos is as good as it gets and it absolutely blew me away. Going again this weekend.
I didn't think chinook Imax was anything to write home about, but thought maybe it was renovated during the pandemic.

A few pages back, there was some discussion about buying movies/streaming them and how some titles go in and out of circulation on the streaming platforms. Everyone knows I'm all in on buying movies, but part of the reason why I've jumped head first into 4K disks is I think this is the end of the line. I just don't see studios and manufacturers putting out 6K or 8K disks anytime in the future, and if they do there probably won't be alot of movies released on them. 4K disk is the best a movie will ever look and sound, and for $20-$45 I can own this movie until I die and watch it whenever I like. I think about vinyl and how so many people were just giving away their collections to buy CDs or cassettes and how valuable some of those albums are now, I think it would be the exact same mistake for people to get rid of their movie collections today in favor of streaming.

I buy a lot fewer movies now than I used to, but I still do buy a few for that reason.

That said even buying them is harder. If you do buy then you almost have to get them right at release otherwise it can be hard to find!

I wanted to buy Dune in 4K to rewatch and my family to watch before the 2nd and it was almost impossible. All the usual suspects either don't carry movies anymore or have a tiny selection of only the most recent biggest hits.

I finally luckily happened to find one at Sunshine Records. Even on Amazon it was there but from a 3rd party seller and would have taken a few weeks to arrive.

They didn’t. At least not that I’m aware of. Dealbreaker for me is the lack of recliners at chinook.

Even though laser ultra at Shawnessy doesn’t have the massive imax screen, it’s still bigger and better than a standard theatre.

I just don’t see the benefit of the larger imax screen outweighing the downsides of chinook theatre overall.

Also my understanding is that chinook imax can do 70mm but is not for Dune 2.

Totally spot on Photon. Outside of Sunrise Records, there is no other big box store to buy movies older than a year. Best Buy doesn't have any, Walmart only has a tiny section and it's only new releases. London Drugs actually used to be solid, but now they are also getting rid of all their movie sections. Here in Calgary we actually have a few great stores to find movies, Rough Cut Video, Video Game Trader and CD Trader are all solid.

Online, Amazon has sales but it's hit or miss. Before Dune 2 came out, Dune on 4K was like $16 now it's jumped up to $40. EBay is a pretty good option but shipping can take forever.

Oh good call on the trader stores, I forgot about those, will definitely check those out next time I'm looking for a movie to buy.

I went for several years without buying hard copies, but since I set up a Plex server I’m enjoying “collecting” again. Preference is the 4k+Bluray discs so I can watch UHD in the theatre, and rip the Bluray to Plex. Not all movies come out in the combo pack, like Top Gun Maverick, so I’ve been going with Bluray for those. I’m slowly replacing DVD’s with Bluray as well, which my wife will never understand, but I can’t stand 480/720. I don’t notice as much difference from Bluray to 4k, but we’ll see where the tech goes.

London Drugs at Brentwood Mall had a pretty good selection of movies, new and old. However I saw they're renovating the store and moving the entertainment section to the middle and putting a Canada Post office in the back. I suspect the movie section is on the outs.

I just kept on thinking, there's Christopher Walken, strange to see him in such a huge sci-fi movie, there's that distinct speech pattern and delivery, there's Christopher Walken. He's great, just an odd choice.
Agreed, Emma Stone should get the Oscar for that performance but in true Academy form they probably give it to the girl from the long and boring Killers of the Flower Moon

I'll never understand people who walk out of movies they paid for, unless it's the transformers universe. In which case you still get no sympathy because you knowingly shelled out money for that.

But for the reasons I'm gathering people walking out of PT for, it definitely is an indictment in my mind too.

I don't know what people expect when they watch the trailer and look at the advertising for the film, or have even a vague knowledge of the director and his past work.

I don't know why middle aged adults would approach a movie like this with the sensitivity of a mormon grandmother. It's not your first time at the rodeo, and we all know you've looked at worse on your computer.

My brain was fried after Dune Part 2. I had just watched part 1 the night before on my tiny hotel tv. Part 2 on the big screen melted my brain.

What a ride.

RE Blu-rays Sales

Unobstructed View is the Canadian license holder for Criterion, Kino Lorber, Arrow and a few others. If you're looking to buy anything like that, and not pay USD and international shipping, they're the place to go. They even do the Criterion flash sales too (albeit 40% not 50% off but hey you're not paying conversion)

I know I'm super late to this but finally got around to watching Whiplash. Amazing, inspiring movie. Probably an obvious recommendation.

I've been cataloguing all the movies I've watched the past month by rating them on IMDB. Been super fun to build up the list and see what movies I prefer. I neglected watching movies for years in place of TV series, so I have a ton to catch-up on.
