I couldn't understand a ####ing word that was being said, so I shut it off.

This operation resulted in multiple armed standoffs in the company when our boys came back and found that the Argies had gone through their stuff and stolen things.

I think the way I'd describe it to people is that some moments almost play like a workplace comedy, so I've noticed a lot of people don't get that aspect of it.

The other complaint is that not enough actually happens, but, that's kinda the point

Those two things make it great in my eyes, but I guess that's where it falls a bit for others

The main criticism I've heard - and the one I agree with - is the lack of character development.

I liked Dune 2. A bit of an old school action film mixed with weird and heavy sci-fi. My cup of tea.

I'll have to watch Generation Kill. Sounds interesting.

Band of Brothers was epic. Damn that series was great from start to finish. The Pacific was great, too, but it was absolutely horrific. Really made you appreciate how bloody and ruthless that campaign was, and I still can't unsee a few scenes.

Spoiler!

IMO laser ultra at landmark is about the same as avx.
Are ultra laser and avx the same kind of picture as imax?

I'd take it farther and say that the thin red line was better than saving private Ryan, as a whole.

It's actually pretty hard to nail down best war movies, as they are pretty subjective. Best hard to track down movie for me might be Tae Guk Gi, Korean film. Best overall film that happened to have war elements, Laurence of Arabia.

Saw Dune 2 in Imax at Chinook on Tuesday. Looked to be about 80-85% full.

As a big fan of the book, I was really hopeful that DV would crush it...

In the end, I thought it was pretty great - not sure if i would label it a masterpiece though? Going to have to stew on it a bit further.

In some ways, the first movie was more coherent and elegant (though I can see why some people found it boring too).

Going to see it again with some other friends next week, so I'll have to see what I think about it after that viewing...

Strangely enough, for a 2hr 45min film, it did seem to 'jump around' a bit too much, which makes me think that the assembly cut would have been a lot more coherent...

I absolutely would recommend watching it at the biggest screen possible, as the sheer craft of film making is undeniable.

Dune Part Two is probably the most well-executed blockbuster in the last few years, including over its predecessor.

Not a book reader coming in so that probably changes my perspective. Looking at it more from a film/filmmaking perspective, it did so many things exceedingly well. Movies like these are the kind that create fandom in casual viewers.

A lot of 10/10 performances to boot. Having well-cast roles can elevate a film and I love the actors for each of these roles.

The elvis actor was amazing. Vill did a great job building him up to when he finally elects to be champion and has his moment. Outstanding tension building in that scene. I was on the edge of my seat.

It wasn't perfection, but about as close as movies of this scale get. The highs here bring similar magic to the likes of the battle of Pelennor fields in ROTK, although it's possible nothing will ever unseat the climactic Rohan charge.

Not exactly. They are considered premium format but aren't imax. Laser ultra doesn’t have the odd aspect ratio that imax does and isn’t quite as large overall. It’s more just like a traditional theatre but bigger and better.

IMO given how terrible chinook imax is, laser ultra or avx are far superior to imax. We don’t have a truly worthy imax theatre in Calgary. Laser ultra with its huge, but not imax huge, screen plus Dolby atmos is as good as it gets and it absolutely blew me away. Going again this weekend.

Noticing that films that can make "advanced" societies by our standards look old or ancient seem to win over fans effectively. I think its because movies like this are what sci-fi is all about. Throw your audience into a universe that is out there while also feeling storied and lived in. Then make it the backdrop of a heroes journey that has redemption, revenge and an uprising to overthrow an oppressive force and you've probably got a winner.

Jesus. Made the mistake of watching Mea Culpa in its entirety on Netflix last night. The 24% RT and 4.1 IMDB far too generous. Do not watch this

I don't think I liked Dune Part II. Or maybe I was just disappointed. My fault for reading the book I guess.

Left Part II really worried about how they'll adapt Messiah which I'd wager is coming.

They ended the Part II like the first book ends, technically.

But how they approached it felt to me more like a Two Towers or Empire Strikes Back middle chapter ending.

To be clear, I think it it's an above average movie, I just wanted to be more blown away like I was in Part I and I wasn't.

Spoiler!
