I'd love that center depth for an up and coming team.

He knows this hazard better than anybody. He was one of those US college guys himself and has been through it with Fox.
Craigs a smart guy and Im starting to think his support staff is solid as well.

He was also the guy tasked with inking Gaudreau.

NJ fans seem pretty insistent that Mercer doesn't play C. Though I don't know if that's because he's behind others and got moved over.

And with 9 picks already, likely soon to be more the draft is going to be a blast this year too!

Oh believe me, I know it's just a silly fear. But it's there. Not to the point where I'm one of the people trying to spread panic until the 11th hour like people were with Gaudreau, but it's always an inkling in the back of my mind

Let's not forget, Conroy's American too, so he can definitely speak from experience about Americans playing up here and what it's like and the positives of doing so. He helped Gaudreau and Coronato to sign here.

Has the 1st, has the B or better prospect, and it's missing the cap dump.
I'm not one to get into twists and turns over returns, but it seems to be in range to me.

Yes, I know we just got one from the Nucks but they were first in the league at the time and the odds of them even missing the playoffs were really low.

Remember when Toronto traded their first rounder in 1991 for Tom Kurvers. Then they went into a slump and it turned out to be #3 overall - Scott Niedermayer.

Yeah we all have a big case of insecurity with this stuff.
Not every American wants to avoid Canada.
Not every American has the leverage to think he can.
If he's my kid I say hell yeah to him. Go get established and you can play somewhere else when you're established.
That still sounds crappy but if that's the path the Flames move another high value asset for assets.

A 2026 1st from Tampa could actually be a decent gamble. They're not exactly setting the league on fire now. In 2 more seasons who knows. Likely not a bottom feeder but probably not elite either.

The appeal for Howard would be that Calgary is probably his shortest route to being in the show. Tampa would be much more of a logjam in the immediate future.
It is a great place to get established and the "tax concerns" wouldn't be until down the road since ELCs are ELCs.

And potentially a deeper draft even if they don't fall apart.

Tampa package isn't bad but still way under what you'd expect for an extended Hanifin. But goes without saying its a pretty slim market at this point.
Gotta assume that if Lundell comes onto the table Florida deal would be more desireable even if the secondary pieces aren't as good as Howard and the Tb first both are likely not super high end/blue chip pieces more of - hopefully solid secondary pieces.

Still going to have Kucherov, Point, Cirelli, Sheary, Hagel, Paul, Hanifin, Sergachev, Cernak, Lilleberg, Crozier, Raddysh, and Vasilevskiy. They will still have top talent throughout the lineup. I don't see them going for a dirt nap for another four or five years.

And yet here they are, with all that top talent and Stamkos too, sitting 8th in the East.

Yeah... if we can get a unprotected 2026 1st from Tampa (who look to be on the back half of their competative cycle)... that has the potential to be a bullet in the Gavin McKenna/Joe Iginla draft. Not especially likely... but potentially.
Howard looks like a guy that's going to be a player (and he's their top prospect... the best one they could offer). Plus another piece?... that's enough to get the yes from me fir sure.
