No, it wouldn't be surprising.

However, citing "winning games" as the reason for the trade pull is careless reporting IMO. It doesn't take long to look at the losing streak to prove that clearly wasn't the case

Elliotte is completely out to lunch on this one.

All true, but the loss against the Sharks was with Wolf in net. As well, prior to the games you mentioned, the Flames had a 4-game win streak (Chicago, Boston, NJ and the NYI), so maybe that's where the 'belief' was coming from? I remember some of the noise being that Markstrom thought he was going to stay in New Jersey.

Whatever it was, it will probably come out at some point soon.

In addition to a goaltender with term, they have to be considering a defender too, but those are very hard to find. They’ve dangled Alexander Holtz, but resisted Dawson Mercer.
Lines up precisely with what i have been hearing as well as some other reports the last 2 weeks.

No doubt that teams want/asked about Mercer, but have been told "not available" at every turn

The original offer that Conroy agreed to was Holtz/pick/prospect....just dont know exactly what the latter 2 were, though it is suspected the pick was a 1st in 25.

So why did they walk away?

Isn't that prospect the price of retention what everyone is saying they couldn't agree too?

Sports media is gossip mixed with analysis of varying quality pieced together to entertain us. We then bring said gossip and analysis to sites like CP to confirm our biases providing us with dopamine hits and keeping us entertained by sports 24/7.

I'm hooked and I need to get off.

Fair. I don’t feel like doing the homework but I do wonder the points behind the playoffs at each of those dates. That could also tell a similar story.

Hell if I know....and actually we don't know that it was the Flames that walked away. Could have been NJ that had a change of heart.

We just don't know who nor why even though many see something written somewhere and run with it like gospel.

Like the whole Friedman thing this morning....his quote is "someone" told him it wasnt about retention but about the team playing well as the reason the trade never occurred.

Easily debunked as the team was not playing well at the time, and more importantly, whoever the "someone" is, doesnt make it fact or even possibly true. Yet you will probably see it debated over and over again like it was Conroy making that pronouncement.

Its a fascinating study in how bias works into the human condition though.
