I thought you might mean Gaudreau, but that was a curveball by Gaudreau and Edwards came in to try and salvage it.
The others don't seem like curveballs to me. More chain of command issues which couldn't possibly be involved over weeks.

I do wonder if the strategy is to trade Markstrom but be patient to see if NJ gets desperate. From Hischier’s and Hughes’ comments, I bet Fitzgerald is under a lot of pressure to do the deal. I think that’s probably the reason NJ off asking for retention.

And if the deal remains unchanged on March 8, and is still on the table, fine, take it. You lost 6 days and made Markstrom a little unhappy.

Good point I forgot about that trade. I would guess actually the Schneider for 9th overall (Horvat) would be the closest. Now would the flames and Devils both agree to a one for one trade of Markstrom for Mercer?

Flames would. I doubt the Devils do. Schneider was young and playing lights out.

Markstrom is going to be 35 this isn’t some young elite goalie.

Holtz is a NHL player and a 1st is a significant piece as well. If that is indeed the offer and Conroy is refusing to move off Mercer that’s a major fumble on his part. I’m not saying that’s what’s happening but just a hypothetical scenario.
No goalie is going to get you a young top 6 C. I don’t think it’s ever happened.
|
If it is Holtz, I would be pretty firm on the first. Worst case, next years first but this years, preferably. Especially if the Flames are taking Vanichek back in the deal.

Fitz is just being greeedy. He has TWO number 1 centres and a very good 3rd line centre in Haula.
Mercer is playing on the wing.
Just give up Mercer and be done with it.
NJ needs a goalie, Flames need a centre. It’s a perfect match and Fitz is just being a tool. Fitz not giving up Mercer, a centre which is what the Flames need and offering Holtz is like the Flames offering them Backlund when they need Markstrom.

Age isn’t playing to our favour for sure. However Mercer is bottlenecked in the Devils depth chart with Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier ahead of him and I guess there’s about a 0% chance he supplants Hughes and a slight chance of beating Hischier for the 2C spot.
They must have a plan for him because that would be a bummer to Mercer being logjammed like that.

I agree he will have options, it is just that Brossoit is the absolute stud UFA goalie he can get. Never been a number one before but what time better than the present to find out if he can do it. And he keeps Mercer even if it does not work out.

Now that markstrom has expressed his unhappiness publicly, waived for New Jersey (and assuming no one else) and may have even asked to be moved now, we will be fortunate to get a second

No team has ever complained about having too much center depth.
The only jam is if they can’t afford Mercer’s next contract

At this point, after all that has allegedly happened, I’d move him for that
We gain cap room that we could use to get an extra pick or two brokering other transactions and get Wolf going to see if he has any NHL promise

New Jersey can just as easily go free agent shopping and sign a goalie.

And be in the exact same spot they are in now. They might as well keep Vanacek. Please enlighten us what the other options will be

Or Mercer requests a trade for more minutes / responsibility. I don’t see a huge raise coming for him with his limited responsibilities. All speculation of course.

Powerplay Quarterback

My bold (rose tinted glasses) prediction (wish). We hear nothing all day, kipper has an amazing jersey retirement ceremony. Then warmups, and bam, Vladar in starters net, Markstrom gives pucks plus his stick to fans. Markstrom 3rd star despite not playing, trade announced post game.

So they should just trade him because they have done great job and managing their team and accumulating depth?

LeBrun said the goalie market will be larger in the offseason.
Vanacek is a good tandem goalie having a bad season like Markstrom had last year.
