Most players on $4 mil+ contracts in the NHL today have NMCs/NTCs.

I appreciate the stat, however does anyone think that a NMC/NTC has prevented any of the 9 current Flames players from signing their contracts for the same amount and term?
For Conny moving forward, I would say learn from this and drop the AAV, term, or both if a player (agent) is asking for a NTC/NMC.
These clauses handcuff a GM and the player and their agent end up with more control than the team regarding future decisions.
If you cheer for a player whatever jersey he’s wearing then I guess it’s okay, but if you cheer for a team, then it’s a huge disadvantage.

Keeping in mind that Conroy has alluded to many times that he can always trade his assets for players. I don’t know what targets he has in mind but high picks in 2025, 2026 shouldn’t shy him away from any deal. Looking more likely that those future picks will come from the Hanifin deal. We don’t have to be stuck on Mercer if it’s a deal breaker. I know we have leverage but IMO, Markstrom needs to go now for Vladar and Wolfs development.

Maybe a little light but I think it’s closer than you think. The reasons I would do trade straight across are for following reasons:
1) I don’t believe in the “vast overpayment” rumours . It’s got to be somewhat fair for both teams or trade won’t be done
2) following rumours of no retention I see the original trade being holtz and a 2025 first.
3) if it’s the 2025 first, good chance it’s a late first. I just don’t see a late first and a winger as helping out flames as much as a young center
4) I believe hanifin will be traded as a rental price. It pretty much only leaves Markstrom as bait to get a young center. They won’t be trading Anderson or weager in the following year. Just not much left to get a young center

Where I believe they erred was letting this drag for awhile. It’s simply a communication issue. Nothing more or less. At this point I know it’s only a week away but Conroybshould be telling teams best offer on the table or he won’t entertain a deal. Then communicate that to Markstrom. The overpayment thing while admirable to the fan base is total nonsense. It’s a PR line and that’s it.

For us, there is a lot of value in saving those 3 retention spots for next year. We have Sharangovich, Kuzmenko, Mangiapane on decent sized expiring deals. I’d like to keep Sharangovich, but it’s about the options of extension talks fall apart. If Carolina needs help with resigning Pesce and co, I’d take on the last year of Orlov for a 2nd then flip him at the deadline for at least a 2nd.

It’s not teams though. It’s just New Jersey.

Those clauses are so common and expected for good players, that it’s likely you couldn ‘t sign the player without them.
It’s not a question that the contract could be decreased in value with those clauses added. It’s more likely that you’d have to pay way more to exclude them.
A GM cannot unilaterally change the market.
I would suggest that most if not all of the 9 players who signed contracts with NTC would not have signed those contracts without them.

True. Dragging it on and on while it’s out there in the media can clearly piss off a person. Especially if he’s given permission. I’m sure Conroy has learned and stuff but if the deal is fair make it. What more can we hold off for? A third rounder? Is it worth the toil?

Agreed.
To add to the attraction for Mercer, it looks as though there are 3 C’s at the top of this years draft (top 10), Celebrini, Lindstrom, and Catton,…. I think.
In other words, especially in the case of Celebrini, the Flames could very well not have a chance at any of them.
Coupled with Conroy’s public statement that they’re looking for young players who might be buried in other teams org charts certainly points towards Mercer and perhaps Lundell.

I would be very happy with Holtz and a 2025 1st in return for Markstrom. I would prefer Mercer to Holtz. But I would really like how Holtz and a 2025 1st would set the Flames up long-term, at forward. I think Zary could be moved to centre because his two-way play has been so strong, and his elite prospects page still says center because he’s played lots of center in the past. So, you’d have
-Left wingers: Pelletier (2019 draft) and Honzek (2023 draft);
-Centre: Zary (2020 draft); and
-Right wingers: Holtz (2021 draft) and Coronato (2021 draft).
You’d have 5 picks in the first round over the next 3 drafts; Mangiapane, Pospisil and Sharangovich as good, young forwards; Poirier, Grushnikov, Morin and Brzustewicz as promising defencemen-prospects, to go with Kylington and Andersson as good, young defencemen; and Wolf and Vladar as promising young goalies.
Now, imagine you could get Lundell and another 2026 conditional 1st via Hanifin.
I’d feel really great about the future. You’d have a solid up and coming core to add to solid veteran leadership in Backlund, Coleman, Weegar, Andersson and Kadri. The part that would make me most nervous would be the goalie position.

The thing I keep getting back to is that it’s just 1 team. He isn’t being shopped around. I think he should respect that, just like we respected that he wants to stay but would waive for specific teams.
I could see him being upset if his name was popping up in Buffalo, LA, Carolina and Conroy was trying to go to the highest buyer.
Sounds like New Jersey has been after Markstrom for a while. Dropped a major demand as well. Holding up the deal for an unrealistic return would be foolish at this point.

Killing a deal if it’s a 1st and Holtz by insisting it be Mercer would be ridiculous. I mean you can push for it till the end that’s his job, but to completely kill the deal over that would be foolish. 1st and Holtz is still great value for us, and gives us assets to go after another C.
|
For Tom to kill a deal because he wants it to be Holtz rather than Mercer would be foolish.

The downside to walking away is much greater for NJ than the Flames.
Calgary can still make runs for playoffs with Markstrom backstopping them, and he can mentor the wolf. They can look to move Hanifin for the young center.
NJ would be stuck looking at worse B tier options and continue losing due to goaltending woes in the meantime, and this season would be toast (if it wasn't already).
This is why Conroy doesn't need to budge.

There are plenty of potential downside for not trading Markstrom for the Flames. Just need to think harder.

"If you think harder, there is plenty of downside" is hilariously on brand for you.
I mean that as a gentle joke. I find it a funny encapsulation of your mindset as many of us perceive it.

NJD play LA tomorrow at 1230 pacific. If a deal goes down today, does that allow enough time for Marky to play for NJD tomorrow or will visa issues slow everything down?

This could be a nasty bit of business on new jerseys part too:
Make an offer to Calgary for markstrom that desirable for the Flames
Calgary secures permission from markstrom
The trade is about to happen
Jersey changes the terms and leaks the story
Now we are stuck with a pissed off markstrom and only one place to trade him

Visa slows it down. I think tanev said he is still in Calgary awaiting a visa.

Not a chance, IMO, from what we've seen lately. Also, it would be shocking if the Flames made a trade today and took the spotlight away from Kipper.
