Well maybe they aren't keeping Markstrom...

Markstrom may slide some, and the best deal might have been now. But maybe not. It's pretty tough when there is only one real suitor. Maybe there will be more of a bidding war later.

Markstrom has been good in 2 of 4 years here. Yes - if you disqualify the two bad years for injuries and a kid - then yes he's been good the entire time. If I disqualify the two good years because of reasons - then he's been bad the entire time. I'd prefer to just count all 4 years.
And I'd also add - in 1 of the good years, he completely imploded against the Oilers in the playoffs.

Hopefully that happens in the next week and not the summer

Well not he might be pissed and put the screws to the guys up top and not waive his NTC.
This is getting messy now.

Doesn’t sound that messy. Sounds like he was saying it could’ve been handled better. Nothing wrong with that. I doubt he doesn’t waive out of spite. Doesn’t sound like many players would do that in general. If you’re offering a better situation playoff wise I think most would give it a go.

That will just make it a toxic situation that'll be festering for 2 more seasons. I don't think anyone would want that.

Just do the NJ deal take what you can get. Just. Do. It.

Yeah. If it’s a fair deal to it. Trying to get a third rounder for extra retention is a little silly to hold up a deal. It’s gone on, live and learn.

He is taking shots at management through the media. Not ideal.

Personally, I'm happy Conroy made this decision. I'm not as high as most on Wolf right now being ready and would prefer the Flames didn't just give the net to Wolf and Vladar. This does not mean I don't think he could become Calgary's starting goalie one day though. I actually think Wolf has that chance, but would benefit greatly by spending more time backing Markstrom up and learning under Markstrom how to be an NHL goalie.
I understand the perspective from some that they'd welcome the Flames moving Markstrom out and if the Flames plummet in the standings, they plummet, but I agree with Conroy here when he says that a losing environment and culture is not a good one to develop your future stars in. Sure, you get the high picks finishing in the bottom 5, but all of the kids you have with the big club suffer playing on that sort of team for 2-3 years.

Should sufficiently drive down the return.

I don't think it's that...I heard it might be more the opposite and he wants to be dealt now / is more open to it than he was 2-3 weeks ago.

Not really. NJ already has a deal in principal with Calgary (apparently). Doubt they want to start getting cute and would rather just push it over the finish line.

He is playing at a high level right now. This team is not competing for a cup this year or the next 2 barring some dramatic turnaround.
Just like Tanev said he doesn't have a lot of cracks left to win a cup, Markstrom is the same age. Not a lot of time left, and this year feels wide open.

I think you can probably interpret what Markstrom said in two ways:
1. He's frustrated with all of the trade noise and the fact that he hasn't been dealt yet, and has told management he is not waiving this year so that he can just focus on hockey.
2. He's frustrated with all of the trade noise and is now 100% open to being dealt right away.
Given the rumour that Calgary has pulled Markstrom out of trade talks, my guess is it's the first one, and we will wait until the summer, when Markstrom will definitely be traded.

"Paraphrased a bit".
How about we don't paraphrase and let's see if he's miffed or just saying something about the process.

Conroy not looking great in this respect. I know he is a good guy, but remarks like this from a well respected guy that choose to sign here is damaging.
