We are trading guys who play major roles on the team away for futures. The team can clearly see what is happening.

I wouldn't give him away, but that package is an overpay for a non elite goalie.

But if that's not what Conroy is looking for it doesn't matter. Unlike the UFAs he doesn't have a set time to trade Markstrom so he can wait until he gets what he wants.

Seemed like they really wanted a 1st for Tanev but took the 2nd instead with the prospect attached.

I hate this bs excuse about doing what’s right for the players fighting hard. If a key part of the strategy long term is the returns that Markstrom can bring, communicate to the players exactly that after the deal is done and move on. Corporate speak on issues is a load of nonsense.

We looked for a 1st straight up for Tanev, not a 1st with a cap dump attached. Good on us not caving to Colorado or Edmonton. We can help Colorado but I have zero interest in dealing with Edmonton.

Hmm I wonder if he thought he was traded and the trade broke down. Now he has to hear about the rumours everyday.
I wonder if the report about him expecting to remain in New Jersey was accurate now.

He's a UFA. Markstrom isn't. Like I said, Conroy doesn't have a set time to trade Markstrom. If he held out to try and get a 1st for Tanev he might end up getting nothing in the end. So he took the next best offer.
Trading UFAs wouldn't deflate a team the way trading a player with term would. You send the message to the team you're giving up. By trading UFAs you're just telling them you're getting something for players who are leaving.
The players aren't dumb. They know they aren't a contender where risking losing players for nothing could be worth it.

I still look back to that game against the Sharks where Wolf referenced "He wasn't expecting to start", then Markstrom was going around handing out pucks and being very chatty in warm up (which people have said is not the norm when he's not starting), and the team looked absolutely flat and defeated that night.
You had 3-4 different posters on CP all stating something was going down that night too (Sec214, Dis, Rasta, and one other), and I heard from a different person that night that it really seemed like something was "really close".
I think he and the team thought he was being moved that day or the next, it fell apart, and there were some rumors that I heard that he wasn't really happy with how that whole thing went down.
Seems that he might be confirming it a bit today.

No ideal to get someone nice, angry but make the trade and move on. Squeezing blood from a stone through numerous leaks has been exhausting. Imagine what him and his friends feel.

There was the Emily Kaplan story a week or so ago that said Markstrom thought he would would be leaving the NJ area during that road trip. So it was probably close enough that he was mentally prepared to leave the team, then for whatever reason the deal fell apart. Tough for any player, feels it would be even tougher for a goalie.
I blame Fitzy.

I imagine it had to do with them asking him to waive his NTC, he agreed to it, then the trade fell apart. They probably shouldn't have asked him to waive unless they knew 100% a trade was ready to be made.
