Good.
One team was interested in him, weeks ago, asking price wasnt even close, and that interest from that team got out when it probably shouldn't have, because it wasn't close enough to have the Flames approach the player.
Acquiring team didn't seem interest in a counter offer, and since has fallen off the tracks in the 3 weeks since the story got leaked out.
It did give a story to rumor-hungry NHL media and and in turn, some posters here got all juiced up, some of who are now upset because they got all excited for what was literally nothing.

Meh, if NJD had offered up a package that Conroy felt was adequate (essentially a haul/overpay) for a starting goalie having a stellar year with 2 yrs left on his contract…it would have been done by now or being finalized. It’d be a different story if Marky was a UFA. But he’s not so there’s no reason to trade him for FOMO.
I can also see the “message it sends the team” angle. These guys are fighting down the stretch here and say what you want about “sell high now, we ain’t making the playoffs anyways” which I can understand as well but it’s also missing the point about the morale and culture dynamics of a dressing room especially as you’re grooming young talent to experience that battle every night/winning culture down the stretch…
The summer may open up other opportunities post playoffs as teams evaluate their goaltending situation… Conroy likely has a much better pulse on that than any of us..

No time to read the whole thread, but 100% this. Markstrom is an up and down goalie and this trade deadline gave a playoff team three tries with him at a lowered cap hit after retention. You nail that deal every day of the week, you don't wait.

Our insiders were more on par with fan proposals. I think it was Holtz without a first (maybe a 2nd?) and I'd be really happy with that.

So LeBrun said they're still going. TheFourthPeruod said they're not taking calls on Markstrom.
I trust LeBrun waaaaay more than Pagnottas cold caller.

100% Dino. I don't really buy what was being sold on CP in terms of inside info, but I believe a significant offer was made and that the Flames should take a significant offer for Markstrom while he's playing lights out. He's an up and down goalie.
I mean this message board is one year removed from discussing what it would it take to get rid of Markstrom, lol.

You’ve said this twice; up and down goalie. He’s had one down year in his career…

The longer Conroy holds on to Markstrom the longer it will take for the bottom to fall off. And it needs to happen to get elite talent unless they get lucky with later picks. That being said Conroy has already shown he won't take bad deals and good for him for establishing that. Just have to hope some team steps up and gives a fair offer.

This screams Iginla 2.0 all over again, at that time, team consistently missed the playoffs for a few years, yet prioritized Iginla over team direction, they waited until the last second, and the return was absolute crap, when opportunities come to move the team in the right direction, you need to capitalize as one does not know what the future will hold

Sure… if you completely ignore Toffoli, Zadorov, Lindholm, Tanev, and Hanifin… yeah they’re just hanging on to whatever they can to prioritize… something? Over team direction.

This. He’s only had two years under a 9.10 save percentage and one of those (a) wasn’t that bad and (b) was due to injury and a hurried return (which IMO the Flames may have been guilty of more than we care to admit).

The team feels that have a chance to get into the playoffs so that's the message being sent. As a fan, I like to see my team playing well.
Here is the fun part, as a fan, the business of the team doesn't matter. Its not my job to worry about it. If I don't like the product on the ice, I just don't pay for it.
Being an armchair GM doesn't change anything with the team except the enjoyment of the game. Try it. Just watch hockey and enjoy it. Life is too short. You could get hit by a bus in the summer then next season doesn't matter to you any more.

A classic.

If the return was indeed 2 1st round picks or a 1st and Holtz that helps us much more than keeping Makrstrom.
I wouldn't give him away, but that package is an overpay for a non elite goalie.

Conroy can still suck and blow and the same time here. He can trade Markstrom for the long term well being of the team while also spending a forth or something to bring in a lesser goaltender for the playoff run (if he wants that). I hope Lebrun is right.

So I'm going use this site a lot over the next week but Puckpedia has a great tool that shows the value of retention and taking on salary.
So this is likely where a Markstrom trade gets tough...
Let's say the relative offer for the Devils for Markstrom is Holtz + 2nd....(just to keep things a bit conservative to start).
If the Devils want the Flames to take back Vanecek...the relative value of that is a 2nd round pick (~36th overall) if you consider him to be strictly a cap dump.
Then if the Devils also want retention on Markstrom:
25% = 2nd round pick; ~40th overall.
50% = 1st round pick; ~27th OV
So let's say the Devils do want 50% retention and for the Flames to also take Vanecek...then that makes the deal something like:
Markstrom (50% retention)
for
Holtz
Vanecek
1st Round Pick
2nd Round Pick
2nd Round Pick
If it's 50% retention without Vanecek included then its:
Markstrom
for
Holtz
1st
2nd round pick
And that's actually considering a pretty conservative asking price for Markstrom himself of Holtz+2nd.
So I could see where they may be having a hard time completing this trade...depending on how you value Markstrom, contract retention, and potentially Vanecek as a cap dump (if applicable) ...it gets pretty to be a pretty rich cost.
