I don't mind this for a few reasons, team culture being one. They are in the fight for the playoffs and gelling as a team. Selling their MVP who is signed for two more years would be a blow to that progress. The team will fall in the standings regardless given the D situation; we don't need to emulate Ottawa or Buffalo.
Two, there will be more buyers in the off season. The goalie UFA pool is very thin, so it might be worth our while to wait. Patience can pay off.

Huge missed opportunity if this can be taken at face value.
People have huge copium saying his value will be higher in the offseason.
Same people were saying Tanev and Hanifins value would be higher at the deadline then last summer.
Plus whose to say they're motivated to trade him in the summer. Maybe that's sending the wrong message then as well.
Hello mushy middle my old friend.

If you had to name what the Flames do better than anyone else, it would have to be half-assing a job to stay in the mushy middle, and giving away first round picks when they shouldn't.
It's hard coded into the org's DNA.

Keeps the logjam in goalie.
I wish the NHL had a loan system. I’d really like Vladar to get a long run of games before we make a decision on him.

Why do people believe there will be a future market for Markstrom? IMO there has been maybe a week of tradeable time in the contract prior to this current potential trade window existing, and that was in the 21-22 season prior to playoffs. I don't know why we are confident there will be another opportunity to trade him this summer or beyond. Especially if our team begins to suck as we move out capable defenders like Tanev.

How is the market different in the offseason? Who becomes available that isn't already? Why would the price change on the guys that are available?

1. real chance the flames skid out to end the season and the shine comes off markstrom with less defensive rigor in front
2. teams feel more comfortable giving young goalies chances to start the season, and are likely to continue preferring to watch prospects like Mercer developing.
3. Boston has a goalie that will no doubt be available in the offseason, just a matter of determining which, and that goalie will be better than ours. Right now we potentially have the best available.
There are three reasons why we shouldnt expect his value to remain this high, now you could answer my question about why we are expecting it to remain high or become easier to acquire what we are hoping for.
Also with Cap moving up this summer we could see teams make moves not yet conceived. IMO vegas has a spare goalie as well that could move in the right scenario.

IMO we also shouldn't be rewarding players for playing well when there's no pressure anymore. That's the only time these guys perform, when no one is expecting them too. That's not worthy of praise.

If Markstrom's performance comes down with both Tanev and Hanafin gone, which is probably likely, it'll hurt his value. His value will never be higher than right now. These opportunities are fleeting.

I'm not convinced that Holtz and a 1st were offered, and if they were, I think it is extremely foolish that we did not capitalize. I am willing to eat crow later if we extract better value than that.

There will be a market for Markstrom between now and same time next year. The buyers might change, and might be even more desperate depoending on how the POs go. Let's say Toronto bows out early and it's on goaltending, or NJ misses the POs by 4 points, which is all about their goaltending. Their fans will demand a deal. And the draft will be more material then.

Gotta stay in the race for that coveted 15th overall pick, after all.
Playing the long gaame for when Markstrom regresses and the market becomes saturated, so we can trade him for a 5th and a cap dump.

What do you mean we shouldn't reward players for playing well? That makes no sense.

Yeah I have to think people were really overestimating the return or it would be done.
No way they could say no to 1st+holtz.

Not trying to be an insider or anything but I have heard from a reliable source NJ was only offering their 2025 and 2026 1sts nothing more.

The flames like all the Canadian teams do half measures. The Flames are a team desperately needing to rebuild. They have no Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Iginla, Kiprusoff, Fleury etc in the organization. You can occasionally dumb luck your way into them but it’s rare. About one a decade if that. The rest of the time you need high end draft picks. Markstrom is a great goaltender, but he’s 34 and by the time the flames actually get some of the parts they need Markstrom will basically be done.
It is completely nonsensical to keep him in this situation. Vladar could develop into someone of his calibre but we need to actually see him be the starter to see what he is. He very well could be the goalie the flames need when the rebuild is done. Likely not, but you don’t know until you see.
Frankly the return is besides the point. If we got a similar return for Markstrom as we did for Tanev, I would be entirely fine with that. The team needs to open spots and cap space for the offseason.
