I guess the message is "we'll trade who we have to, but we still believe in the players remaining in the room"?

I don't know.

If Markstrom wants to finish out the season a Flame I'm okay with that as it's probably the right thing to do in that case. They traded their top center and two of their top 5 defensemen with another to be moved next week. I'm pretty sure the locker room got the message a long time ago so that comment about wanting to send the right message is kind of silly. The players fully know the business as teams do this every season.

You think New Jersey is going to increase their offer in the offseason for a 34 year old goalie?
No idea - they might. Goalies frequently play into their late 30s at a very high level if they haven’t sustained major leg injuries.

I like Talbot, but New Jersey’s problem is that they don’t have a true #1 goalie worthy of the rest of their roster.

Talbot doesn’t solve that. Their players aren’t going to stand up like “holy ####, we got Talbs? Let’s ride!”

Markstrom is the exact sort of addition that will jumpstart their season and propel them into next year with momentum.

Ullmark is going to cost even more than Markstrom, if Boston wants to trade him to someone they could see four times a year plus playoffs.

There’s no not paying for quality. Marty Broduer is saying they need a franchise goalie.

He wasn’t talking about Cam Talbot.

This is only half true.

There's not only an offseason but all of next season to the TDL as well. Flames can wait for the best deal to come along. Some otehr team will be just like NJ or even more desperate.

It’s probably just posturing.

We don’t really know that Holtz and a 1st were offered.

Lame.

Markstrom should be traded as soon as possible. Given his age, contract status, organizational depth and direction I don’t think Markstrom is a good fit for the Flames.

The dude has to go. Today, next week, this summer...the sooner the better.

There's absolutely no benefit to being a middling team, and the reality is that with the 2024 draft pick situation that Treliving got us into, this team would do well to suck, and suck hard, next year. Markstrom is just too good for this team right now...he probably already cost us 3-5 draft spots this year...let's not shoot ourselves in the foot next year as well.

Sure hope so.

Burke let Cammy walk for nothing so that he could buttress his own ego in the name of "message sending" so who knows?

That's assuming he plays at this level next year.

... or down the stretch with the teams shutdown pairing being dealt..

It's very possible the best offer was tabled weeks ago.

Its a decent assumption. He's had one non-injury affected off year in his whole career.

‘Sounds like X.’ What was said that sounds like X, and who said it?

‘The Flames are telling people Y.’ Who are these people?

With attributions that vague, this sounds like someone is playing a game of telephone while waiting in the Orange Julius line. I'm really not buying it.

I heard some speculation on a podcast last week (maybe the one with Warrener in it) that the Flames might be better off waiting for the off season because there would be more teams that could fit the contract. There just weren't a ton of teams looking to add a big salaried goalie right now.

Perhaps they know something.

Keeping Markstrom into the next season is a lose/lose for the Flames imo. If one continues to dominate then he can push their pick into the danger territory for Montreal and if he regresses then his value will decrease.

This would be the wrong move. We need to sell high, unless the return is actually terrible.

All keeping Markstrom would do, with his play so far, is keep us in that dreaded 9th overall spot that we are all so used to.

Markstrom isn't Superman. He's not doing that with the D gutted.

I'm perfectly fine with this.

Either pay the price or get lost. He's under contract, there is no 'ticking clock' to get rid of him like the UFAs.

He has never asked to leave, never pouted and never been negative.

Don't mind keeping Markstrom at all if the bait isn't good enough. There is something to be said for keeping a piece or 2 that can keep the team competitive and create a positive environment for the youth on the team.

Besides... the assets acquired for Zadarov, Lindholm, and Hanifin will already be a pretty good sell off.

Not like Markstrom can't be dealt later. Seems to make sense to me.
