Pick a team in the offseason and hope you win a cup?
or
Sign 1 year deals with Calgary where you are reported to be building a home, and then get traded at the deadline each year to a top contender?
|
That assumes the Flames are selling again at the deadline next year. We could be in a wildcard and making some minor additions to the lineup, not sending Tanev out again. I doubt he wants it to be a rollercoaster.

Also considering that of the contending teams the difference in 2nd is likely 1 or 2 spots in draft order, getting the prospect you like best is probably the smarter play.

If that's the case, I hope the Dallas deal F-ed over Toronto.

I'm just going by that article by Wheeler written three weeks ago, since nobody here has any better information about Dallas' prospects. He himself says he emphasizes skill and upside in his rankings and according to him Grushnikov's solid defending could carry him to be a 6/7. Those guys hit waivers every year so to me, he's a throw in at this point.
|
That former Florida scout guy projects him as a 4-5.
Why don't you wait and see a bit before burning down the house.
Not directed at you in particular, but this thread is wild. Absolutely wild. Similar to what resalien said, if we don't get the next Gretzky back for hannifin and the next Crosby for marksstrom, the pitch forks will be out in full force. The sense of valuations here are off the charts.

Thrilled with the direction of the team under Conroy’s leadership. It’s so refreshing to see someone follow through with what they said they would do. This return feels right on expectations, so I’m glad to see one, maybe two picks added to give our scouts more at bats for the upcoming draft.
For the first time in a long time I’m optimistic about the direction of the Flames. Now will be fun to see more picks/futures added leading up to the deadline.
GFG!

Leafs media seems to be very critical of Brad for missing out on Tanev, but their fans seems to be making a lot of excuses like he's not a puck moving defenseman, etc. I think it shows how understated his game is and how underappreciated he is by casual fans.

People in other cities really don't understand Tanev's game at all. I've seen other teams' fans talk about getting him to crush opponents in the boards or in front of the net.
Tanev is an elite positional defenceman who blocks shots, wins pucks, stops passes, makes neat exit passes and can skate very adequately. He is not a punishing defenceman and more than he is a scoring defenceman.

@EricFrancis
Just got off the phone with Chris Tanev who said it's been an emotional 24 hours, as he loved his time in Calgary.
He took me through the process that led to his trade to Dallas, which he is excited about.
“We had brief talks in training camp and then basically a couple weeks ago I sat down with Connie and said, ‘I want to try to win – this could be my best chance to do it. He was super understanding and would only trade me to a team where they had the potential to win, and I appreciate that.
“As hard as it was, I felt it was the best opportunity to win a Stanley Cup, which has been my ultimate goal my whole career.”
He'll remain in Calgary a few more days while trying to secure his visa and said that while he's excited to throw himself into the Stars experience he will remain open-minded if he becomes a UFA in the summer, and wouldn't dismiss the possibility of re-signing in Calgary.

The Leafs don't need a puck moving dman anyways. Tanev is a perfect fit for them. Tanev is a top end PK dman and the leafs are bottom 10 in the league. Huge miss for them

Excellent summary of his game. No surprise why we saw his partners reach new heights in their game.
Who knows how the prospect will turn out, but I like the idea of a pure defensive D prospect complimenting our swath of Offensive D prospects. You can't do that if you always go for generic all around defensemen. If you can develop pairs like Tanev-Hanafin or Tanev-Kylington, you're more dynamic. I have even liked what I've seen from Kylington-Pachal so far.

100% agree. I wonder how much ego/gamesmanship came into play between Conroy and Brad. Maybe none, but I'd have loved to be a fly on the wall for their negotiations!

Would love it if A) Tanev wins the Cup with Dallas; b) Flames get the Dallas 2026 3rd rounder, and C) Tanev resigns in Calgary this summer and finishes his career here.

Flames fans had similar comments when he was a potential UFA signing for us four years ago. I couldn't believe it, and I partly assumed it was just Canuck bias but now I've come to terms with the fact that the average fan just isn't that knowledgeable about anyone other than their team's top 10 players.

Tanev also has a 10-team NTC, so he had some control here. It's possible he said no to Toronto and it didn't matter what they offered.

Where was Pospisil projected a year ago? Career 3rd line AHLer? I think most of CP saw him that way.
Some guys rise and others fall in their projections. Development is hard to predict.
