Something Jay Feaster would have fell for, i'm sure Conroy had a clause if any part of the deal fell apart it nulls the transaction.

I like the trade, clearly Flames wanted Grushnikov. They had a dozen teams offering them a second+. I could not care less what individual writers rate prospects as, those are all based on hype and a defensive dman will not be ranked high. I would rather trust multiple professionals scouting a player for multiple weeks than an individual writers ability to rank them.
People don’t seem to mention that he also had 5 points in 6 playoff games last year, looks like a playoff performer. If Dallas didn’t think highly of him, he would not have played all year in the AHL as a 20 year old

So Tanev will return in the summer, but wanted to be traded to a team of his choice? Sounds plausible.

Yep. He wants to win. Oilers and Leafs are both a joke. Paper contenders.

I am astounded at how many of you think you know more than the entire organizational experience working for the Flames. They got 2, maybe 3 assets for an older UFA. They all might work. None might work. But less than 24 hours after the trade, we probably should give it some time to work.

Sounds appreciative of the work Conroy did as well. I think he returns in the summer, hopefully with a Stanley Cup ring.

Hah. No, this huge kid Brady is part of the trade for Markstrom. Next year they are going with Brady and Wolfie. Vladar is going to Toronto in the off season for a first, after playing a stellar last part of the season, and after Toronto's golatending lets them down in the POs.

Good on Connie if he let Chris's preference be the deciding vote between offers. I think that breeds goodwill.

It would be amazing if Tanev got his cup then signed with the Flames in the summer!

Taking a while to get to 5000

Yeah if he doesn't win it all, he isn't coming back.
I'd seriously doubt he'd be coming back anyway. They couldn't agree on an extension at the start of the year and Ottawa is apparently still anxious to get him.

I’ve been a Flames fan since the mid80’s and have watched this team during seasons in which they were supposed to be bad not sell upcoming free agents because they were in a playoff race. Only to have them just fall short or lose in the first round. I love the fact Conroy is not letting the recent winning change his long term goal plan for this organization.
Many here were disappointed in the Toffoli trade for Sharangovich and a 3rd until that 3rd had a name(Suniev). Now watching him score in college has many people much more excited about that trade. Dallas is getting an ageing defensive d-man that is often injured(look back at the series against the Oilers) and may only have him for a few months. The Flames acquired an intriguing young tough defensive d-man that is a very good skater(sounds like a young Tanev) and a 2nd round pick. I read somewhere that at the time Gruchnikov was drafted he was considered one of the best defensive d-men in the draft. That 2nd round pick is going to much more exciting this summer when the Flames draft another prospect with it.
Keep what you’re doing Conroy! You have a big supporter in me!

Indeed. Better chance of him returning if he were to win this year with Dallas. If he doesn't win, I can see him signing his next deal with either Dallas or another likely to contend team for another shot.

Based on Tankathons mock draft, the Stars pick is also right in the range of Justin Poirier. Could end up being a good pick to swing for the fences with!

Honestly it depends...what is the easier way to win a cup
Pick a team in the offseason and hope you win a cup?
or
Sign 1 year deals with Calgary where you are reported to be building a home, and then get traded at the deadline each year to a top contender?

Is he a blue chip prospect that is going to be a sure thing NHLer? No he's not, but there is a big gap between that and a "throw in".
He could never play an NHL game, he could be a 6/7, or he could be a middle pairing d-man in the mould of a Tanev, Manson, or Cernak, none of those guys had remarkable point production in junior or the AHL either.
It actually reminds me of when Cernak was traded to Tampa from LA.

Cernak now has two Stanley Cup rings as a solid top 4 dman for the Lightning to show for it.

Yeah for the player to just be a throw in you'd have to assume no other team was willing to up their offer beyond a second round pick.
So then it's Dallas 2nd and Gurshnikov vs say 10 other teams with just a second.
Likely there were say 5 teams that had a 2nd and a prospect, and they liked this prospect more.
