Problem is they are not going to be giving him away for nothing. It’s going to cost a lot . If flames are using draft capital and other things to acquire players it better be for a centre.

If they just want him gone I don’t know how much he will actually cost. Not too many team can take 8 million in cap without dumping bad contracts and there is a reason beyond rebuilding to move him otherwise Thomas would be on the block as well.
I bet he goes for cheap unless St Louis eats bad long term salary

I think the way Conroy is handling this is the best he can do. And he’s adding a lot of bullets to the chamber. The Flames are likely a top 5 drafting and developing team at the moment so I’d say this approach gives the Flames the best odds to hit one of those rare elite players, and with more picks they might swing for a few more fences as well.
A top 5 pick would be ideal, but pending some serious lottery luck it just isn’t in the cards for 2024

I think you are underestimating how bad the defense will be once Hanifin is gone. Let alone if they figure out the Markstrom trade.

I'd argue that losing Tanev is as big of a blow as losing Hanifin. People forget what a steadying force Tanev always has been, whether it was with Hanifin or Kylington or whoever. Everyone who he played with thrived.

I am less inclined to move Mangiapane if they keep Markstrom. If they do a deal with the Devils and Holtz is coming back then I think they should make room for him or even Coronato to come back up. Only if the deal makes sense for Calgary but he makes sense to retain on if a team wants to pay up. Could be a summer/rental deal next year.

The condition of the D in a post Tanev Hanifin Flames will be interesting
Weeger - Andersson ( will need to play monster minutes)
Kyllington - Pachal ( should be ok)
Gilbert - Oesterle ( yikes)
Solovyov ( rotate him on the bottom pair)

I hope the leafs keep getting rocked 6-2 before the deadline. What would you need from them if we were trading them a 25 % retained Mangiapane and 25 % retained Markstrom while taking back Samsonov and Reaves?

I might be…this team will be in tough to win a lot of games if Hanifin and Markstrom are gone as well (I hope they are).
That said, to get into the top 7 as I suggested, they will need to get lower than Montreal with 54 points to the flames 63. 9 points is a huge gap to close, and Montreal is likely to do more selling as well

This. Tanev was the D equivalent of Backlund on the Flames. Anybody you paired with him was just immediately better.

I’d split the experience across all 3 pairings
Gilbert - Andersson
Weegar - Oesterle
Kylington- Pachal
In the 3rd, if trailing revert to your pairings above and lean on Weegar/Andersson/Kylington.

I see your point but I believe you need a solid top pair who can go out on home ice against Mackinnon and company.

I wouldn't mind seeing more of Kuznetsov.
I actually like him in that lone game he played more than I expected and think he could replace some of what Tanev brought in terms of defensive play / PK.

Taking a while to get to 5000

I felt like Kuznetsov as the victim of some rough luck in his brief time up here. I'd also like to see more of him.

I can respect that angle as well, at some point you have to trust in the youth too, this is all really good experience for them too with the flames as close in the race as they are currently. Against the juggernauts, with the Mackinnons of the league, sure roll out that top pair much of the night, but let the other players eat some minutes against the mid to weaker teams where we have typically had rough results anyways when it’s mattered most the last few years.

Yeah. I think Hanifin's warts are going to start showing more now that Tanev is gone.

You're right, I'd love to see them treat the top D prospects Kuznetsov,
Solovyov, and Grushnikov get some looks. Hell it would be neat to see if Lyle or Poirier get grooving.
I couldn't imagine how ugly things would look without Pachal and Kyllington in theline up.

Hot-ish take - Hanifin is traded prior to the next Flames game, Saturday @ 9pm.
There was a rumour that Conroy told teams to bring their best offers forward cause it was time for these assets to move, and then Tanev was traded the very next day, IIRC.

With the cap space the Flames will have, they’ll be active in the UFA market. I expect they’ll come away with a 2nd or 3rd pairing RHD.
