They can, but that's a separate event. Does this trade increase their chances of doing so? Maybe. If so, then that is something they get from the trade.

I think the best way to put it is that Grushnikov is the same type of player, but a little better than Kuznetsov. He's a better skater, and in today's NHL, that makes all the difference.

Hockeydb gets the player's weight when they are 16 or 17 and rarely updates that stat.

Trade grades: Stars hit home run with Tanev acquisition

On the surface giving one team a A+ and the other a D for literally splitting the goal posts between what all the media outlets had as the goal posts on the deal is beyond stupid.
Dallas standpoint: Offered a 2nd, Flames wanted a 1st. Paid 2nd and a prospect and a maybe.
Calgary standpoint: Wanted a 1st, had 2nd pick offers. Received a 2nd plus a prospect plus a maybe.
Some pretty silly thinking on those grades.

They will have exclusive negotiation rights until UFA day - that’s their only advantage. But consider that they needed 75% off his current cap hit to take him on. I doubt they are intending to extend him absent him taking a huge discount. He’s not going to command a fortune but it will be more than what they are paying him now.

IMO those prices were only going to go up for a pure rental guy like Tanev.
A guy with the character of Tanev is coveted, there is no real comparison available in his situation right now, so Dallas would've still been there this time next week, with more to offer, at worst...for example that conditional pick may not be conditional anymore, or nor would it be 2 years out.
|
He waited 5 weeks.
The first didn't happen.
They moved on it.

Well that's another thing. We don't actually know how healthy he really is. Maybe he is banged up and both sides know it. I imagine that would affect the return.

I think his weight on the AHL site is the most accurate. Big boy. Here's the article (it may have been posted. Sorry if it's a repeat)

Its entirely possible, and even probable, that Nill told Conroy that the deal had to happen now or he would pivot to another one to make sure he didnt miss out completely.
At that point Conroy and crew have to read the tea leaves and decide if waiting was worth the chance of missing on what was returned.
They decided that chance was too large to take so he agreed.

And if even if he is healthy now, the risk is will he stay healthy through a full playoff run.
I think if they move Tanev last deadline they get a 1st for 1.5 years of his play, similar to how McCabe got a first from Toronto (with Blackwell too).
But for only this season it was always going to be a tough ask. GMs that's moved 1sts for guys like David Savard and Ben Chiarot as rentals got absolutely roasted for it. So now in the past couple seasons we haven't seen that as much.

Some rebuttals that I have for some posts:
- Tanev was free, so this was just gravy
Well, Tanev was free, but wasn't at the same time. Brodie tried to sign with the Flames, but Treliving didn't take his call (or had someone else take it), as Treliving was too busy signing Tanev and Markstrom. Brodie then signed with Toronto. Say what you will about value and so on, but Brodie is still playing top pairing on a 9th place team. Should probably be moved down to the 2nd pair IMO, but he was and continues to be an asset that would have remained in Calgary had Tanev not been available 'for free'. It was opportunity cost there.
I am going to really look forward to seeing how he looks live!
|
The overall post is great but I have to disagree on the Brodie part. If he wanted to sign here then he would have signed here. He wanted to go back home in Ontario and his ask was too high for what he brought. This was one of the first "walk to free agency" the Tre did, and right or wrong, it was his fault for not trading him at the deadline when he understood his salary ask.
Thanks for posting your breakdown of the whole deal, i look forward to seeing the kid also.

Let's all remember Treliving paid two 2nds for Hamonic.
This was the best deal available. Conroy has shown that his scouts have been able to do their homework in the short term, so I have faith that this will be fine.
You can't trade for high profile, high point getters every where, as that won't build you a well rounded team. We got a defensive defenseman, who appears to be like a Tanev 2.0, and is already very much sure of his own game and his strengths/limitations.
Every team needs a guy like Tanev, Regehr, etc etc etc. We now have a guy in our system we can grow.

A couple things. At first I had to admit I was wanting more but when you broke it down it made sense. I think Dallas won out because the Flames seem to like Grushnikov. The other reason I like it, is you need some of these prospects that have marinated for a season or two as it typically takes a second rounder 3 to 4 years. I recall Conroy, when discussing Iggy as an assistant to the GM, asking can you have too many draft picks. I think the flames are finding that balance. 9 picks so far in this draft, with probably more to come.
Time will tell, but if he is a Dman that can play with an edge, like some of the things that were mentioned, then I think this will turn out well. Hoping he can be Radko Gudas type Dman. We seem to have a bunch of the smaller great skating Dmen. So an addition of his type is a good thing.

Most of the Flames prospect dmen seem hit or miss types. But with higher ceilings. Nice to have a safer guy, even with a low ceiling.

Everyone - EVERYONE - felt that Giordano's ceiling was a #6
Pretty much everyone felt that Brodie's ceiling was a 5/6
Everyone thought Andersson's ceiling was a 4/5
The only guys that are given higher ceilings are guys that put up points, and guys that go in the 1st round.

I have not seen anyone anywhere state his ceiling is a 6/7 dman.
I’d love to read that, so can you please post the link?

Scott Wheeler mentioned it in his assessment.
Quote:
10. Artyom Grushnikov, LHD, 20 (Texas Stars)
Grushnikov is a fascinating case study in that despite a statistical profile that virtually never translates to the NHL, he has always had some believers because of his skating, length and ability to defend. He’s got balanced posture and control in his skating, which he uses effectively gapping up. He’s an excellent backward skater. He’s got a disruptive stick and an ability to track and then close out physically (which hasn’t always been part of his game but has developed over time).
He’s got a pro build at 6-1 and a playing weight in the 190s. He has just enough poise and vision with the puck to advance play and occasionally involve himself (he started to activate more late in his junior career, and while that hasn’t continued in his rookie season in the AHL, I do think there are more opportunities for him to use his smooth skating and influence play than he realizes). He has defended well for a 20-year-old rookie in the AHL. Time will tell if his defending is high-end enough to carry him into a No. 6/7 role, but the Stars clearly have belief in him or they wouldn’t have drafted him in the second round, signed him and bypassed the ECHL for the AHL.
