Would have liked a 1st but was expecting a 2nd. The retention is the part that makes the deal look pretty average. We were told that the Zadorov trade was weak to allow for better deals on the other UFAs. So far doesn't look that way.
Based on this trade I'm expecting a similar deal for Hanifin except the 2nd will be a 1st. Late 1st and some change.

It so bizarre. It’s right in the title on the page they’re typing the post on. They just learned the name in text form minutes before they posted. Does not compute for me how that’s possible.

It's funny, people saying that Dallas "won" (mostly on other sites) but then saying the Flames likely don't even get the 3rd lol.
So Dallas won but won't win anything and will lose Tanev in a couple months

The Flames didn't give away a 4th-round pick. Dallas did.

But two prospects that were 2nd round picks within the last 3 drafts too. So kind of the equivalent of 2 more 2nds.
1 1st and 3 second (equivalents)
And I'd argue Hunter Brzustewicz is going in the 1st in a re-draft if you were to re-draft today, or at least top 40

I'm pretty sure they didn't say that...but it is good to have the cap available to at least try. They can still retain on 2 trades (Markstrom/Hanifin) which wouldn't be the case if they had retained on Zadorov.

O yeah I know. I have been saying that as people wwre planning the parade for Bourque. Infact I had said a 2nd+grushnikov as a likely option in one of my previous posts.
Doesn't stop me from feeling underwhelmed by the entire collection we've gotten back though.
I would feel alot more comfortable about it all if they said they were rebuilding and not on pace for another mid teens 1st.
I also feel like we should have more then one late 1st for 4 UFAs moved out.
Monahan just got a 1st+ ffs...

Still underwhelming for a 75% retention and to give away a 4th round pick just to stay within regulations for 50% max. BTW, Flames are more successful in their 4th and later round selections than their top 64 picks. When it comes to drafting for the Flames, it's like flipping the coin.

What do you mean by giving away a 4th?

Saying “75% retained via NJ” is pretty obvious for people who know the max retention is 50%, but I can understand how it might be confusing for people who don’t know that.

I think fans generally expect too much for rentals. I think they’ll be able to get at least a 2nd for Sharangovich. I love it. Markstrom next please

They thought Calgary gave up the 4th and don’t realize Dallas did it.

What other UFA was worth a first? Zadorov? nope, Tanev? nope and don't get me started on the late thing

The reality is that when you sell players at the deadline the biggest value teams get is in making their own first round pick higher. Get enough extra picks and you might land 2 extra players out of those if you do well.
Unlike a lot of the fantasy talk on this board. The Flames are not trading Markstrom plus all these pending UFA's and coming out with a future line of 60 point players on ELC's within 2 years plus multiple first round picks.

Hanifin and Lindholm were the ones I was expecting a 1st for in a trade for sure. Zadorov was never going to get one. They opted for a player in the Toffoli trade which has turned out better than expected. Tanev was a maybe for me on a 1st. Conroy showed patience so I’ll just assume he didn’t randomly throw in the towel.

Tanev being off the market increases Hanifin's value IMO
