Team just don’t trade blue chip for rental. This is just another example

He is the best prospect that they can afford to trade. Similar to the prospect they got from Vancouver for Lindholm

Stankoven and Borque were pipe dream

If Calgary was in Dallas' position I sure wouldn't.

Two things are true. One, swap the shoes and most Flames fans would be applauding the wizardry. Two, if this was this trade was proposed yesterday most posters would have shut it down.

If neither of the above is true foe you then good on you. Otherwise maybe be okay with fans suggesting the trade was a bit mediocre, especially 8 days before the deadline.

If you're ranking their prospects it probably goes:

Stankoven
Bourque
Bichel

And doubt any of those guys were available. Then I'd have Kyrou, Bertucci, and Grushnikov as a bit of a grouping in terms of their recent 2nd round pick defenseman.

I won't try and say who is best but feels like Flames wanted something a bit different than what they have in Poirier, Brz, and Morin, and liked this player.

Dallas was on fire in the first 2 rounds of 2021...so I'm willing to give it a shot.

Hey I prefaced that as Devil's advocate for a reason. I think it's an ok pickup and am willing to keep an open mind about it. Curious to see what he can do in the A.

Plus these extra picks can facilitate trades for players they want to bring in, that Dallas 2nd or the Cancouver first could potential be the tipper in a big deal.

I don’t think anyone is over the moon about the deal just recognizing it for what it is.
The idea of waiting longer carries risk. So the evaluation is how much better a deal do you think you can get relative to that risk

I have liked Grushnikov since his draft year, due to his skating and defensive play. Usually the defensive D-men that turn out, are ones that can skate really well. I would be shocked if he wasn't an anchor #5-6 for this team. I wouldn't even be surprised if we see him in a Flaming C soon.

Just when Hanifin is almost gone, people already can’t spell Grushnikov. Ughhh…

This it's just your opinion on the trade right?

People are going to make their own observations, nothing wrong with that. If we acquired a 34-year-old for the Flames today do you think people would be calling Conroy a wizard? Of course not, the Flames needs are a little bit different right now so your comparison wasn't a very good one in my opinion.

Add to the fact that Dallas is not in a retool, so they're needs are completely different than ours. If Conroy was working for Dallas he probably wouldn't be focused on getting younger either, because the team needs for Dallas are different. So I don't get what your point is.

No matter what, I like where the priorities are.

That 2nd (Andersson) has had a fair bit more than 'no impact for the Flames' I would say.
Besides having a good draft year in 2015 when they picked up both Andersson and Kylington in the second round, Flames pretty much wasted those picks year after year. Maybe those past GM's knew going after free agents or trading away 2nd rounders would have better results than running their luck with their own selections. Still underwhelming for a 75% retention and to give away a 4th round pick just to stay within regulations for 50% max. BTW, Flames are more successful in their 4th and later round selections than their top 64 picks. When it comes to drafting for the Flames, it's like flipping the coin.

The flames got a 2nd, a 3rd, and a recent 2nd round pick that is developing nicely. Solid return. Basically two 2nds and a 3rd.

Tanev is older and the injury bug reputation will always be hovering around his head. My guess is that other bidders didn't offer the 3rd.

Alot of quantity over quality there.
But I guess that's more lottery numbers we could potentially hit.
Blue chips don’t get traded for rentals as a rule and are usually quantity trades. This what a rebuild looks like

Here's another way to look at the returns (in total): they have essentially acquired two complete draft years.

Year 1: Sharangovich, Kuzmenko, Brzustewicz, Grushnikov and Suniev (absolute KILLER of a draft)

Year 2: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, conditional 3rd, 4th that might become a 3rd, and a 5th

How do you jump start a rebuild? Acquire 2 complete draft sets! And still more to come.

Teams with high picks aren't trading them for rentals...they will all be "late"
if you thought otherwise IDK what to say

You must have missed the Scorp post. It's barely a 3rd. like 10% chance.
