If the Devils aren’t in a playoff position at the deadline, they have zero incentive to get a deal done this season.

Guys on Kyper & Bourne giving a ton of love for the Flames. Loving their play, and contrasting their situation to the Pens, where in their view, the Pens are wondering how long it will take to turn things around with their team, likely thinking 5 or so years, while they can see Calgary, even if they trade guys away as planned, as long as they keep Markstrom around could be right back in it next year given they have guys like Andersson, Weegar, Kadri, Zary, Kuzmenko, Huberdeau, "who is playing well again".
Brought a smile to my face to see.

Based on the rumors (and nothing is confirmed) there were two rumored reasons the trade wasn't finalized:
A) Flames and Predators are both insisting on Mercer, and Devils are only willing to include Holtz
B) Flames ended up accepting Holtz, but then couldn't align on compensation for the 50% retention (rumored that the Flames ask was Casey)
Feel like in both scenarios there was a deal to be made and could go down as a missed opportunity

As long as they're in the hunt, it's possible.
I'm not saying it gets done, but I can definitely see them revisiting it one more time before the deadline. Especially if they're out shopping for a goalie still.

One thing to consider is, I suppose, that Conroy seems to have a good eye for talent and if he doesn't want Holz versus Mercer that much, there is probably something to it.

Thing is it's like saying...I don't like Pelletier as much as Zary.
Mercer (Zary) is the more proven and better commodity at the NHL level right now, but that also doesn't mean Holtz (Pelletier) has no value.
If the trade was straight up then I 100% agree that Holtz wouldn't be enough.
But if you're getting a 1st round pick too then that's still great value IMO.
We will never get the full details so we will never know exactly what happened, but I honestly feel like not pushing to close a deal when it was really close was a mistake from both sides of the negotiations.

We're on the same page there. I'd take Holtz and an unconditional 24 1st for Marky. And in my humble opinion, they'd be foolish not to. That's two solid assets for a veteran goalie. It's an unheard of return IMO.

As for Hanifin, I have a gut feeling Detroit is a snake in the weeds there. Just feel like Yzermans looking to make some moves right now.

It's also not common for a top-5 goalie to be available via trade with the potential of 3 post-season runs with the team that lands him.
I think he's worth that return as a rental tbh. The fact that he has 2 more seasons under contract after this one only raises his value even more, if we are talking retention as well the price keeps going up.

The more that Detroit keeps winning (especially if the Debrincat-Larkin-Kane line continues to play really well) the more that I think they could do something too.
I actually think Lindholm would have been a better fit though as they could really use another center beyond Larkin, and I do wonder what they would have offered if they were healthy and a hot streak and he was still available.

This is good perspective. I would do Hanifin for a Zary straight across, and I would do Hanifin for a Pelletier + a late 1st.

That's scary to me.
Missed playoffs last season and got 16th OA. Currently out of playoffs and would be picking 14th oa. We're supposed to be happy with this next year?
Isn't the mushy middle the worst spot to be? When did people become happy with this.

Yeah same reaction. We have a good youth injection and some optimism. But still not the high end talent needed to fully turn this around. Lots more work yet.

Probably when they sold off a number one centreman and 5th dman to get more draft picks and younger, while actively looking to trade a whole second pairing and listening to teams on a number one goalie. Seems like a big push to get younger and collect draft picks and a big change of pace from the Treliving days.

I’m all in favour of compliments but truly they need to get a good draft position for a couple years. Or have a stacked top line of below star players to trade two for one.

Markstrom is the reason for the mushy middle. The team has been feeding off of his vezina caliber season.
Flames would easily be 10 points less in my guestimation without him. And a truer reflection of the team overall.

I had hoped we wouldnt just be on a new path that leads to the same result.
The goal should be better results.
