I could almost see a Tkachuk Trade 2.0 happening between those two teams.
Ekblad (Weegar)
Verhaghe/Bennett (Huberdeau)
2026 1st
for
Brady Tkachuk

That’s actually a really interesting trade proposal. Might be a bit of an overpay by Florida as Brady has not put up a 100 point season like his brother did the year he was traded. But I could see this being a trade that could interest both sides.

I guess it all depends on how loudly Brodeur is barking at Fitz during those 3 games.

Id be annoyed if I was a devils fan. You don't have an endless window and they are just punting a year by not having a goalie. And waiting to the off-season leaves open the potential some kind of awful jack Campbell like free agent contract.

There are a lot of scared GMs out there. They don't like the idea that they might lose a trade.

A team I am really interested to see what they do is St. Louis. They have a ton of trade chips:
Buchnevich
Parayko
Binnington
Hayes
And some others.

They do, but those are going to be secondary assets after the big chips are moved off the trade board. I would venture to guess that those are only going to be names moved on deadline day once the other big deals are done.

The NHL is full of cowards. Major reason why the amount of player movement is so little.

It wouldn't be a trade that happens now, and more of an offseason trade.
And it really depends on contract status once discussions on re-signing open up for the Florida players. Contract status is such an important part of these trades in today's NHL.
All of Bennett, Verhaeghe, and Ekblad are UFAs after next season and will be 28 or older, and Brady had 4 years at a very affordable $8.2M for the 4 years after this one and is only 24.
The 1st is probably too much but something around those UFAs and B.Tkachuk could be very interesting. I think most would have said Huberdeau, Weegar, 1st for Tkachuk was too much at that time too though.
It's why it's mimicking the structure of the Matthew Tkachuk trade completely, you had Huberdeau and Weegar as pending UFAs, Florida didn't love their asks, so they turned them into a single player they could lock up at a rate they liked.
Similar scenario here.

Making it Flames related...the Flames facilitate the trade, as a 3rd party, in some unfathomable way and inexplicably end up with Lundell.

None of those are UFAs either.
Does anyone really want nearly 31 year old Parayko with $6.5Mx6 to go after this year at the deadline?
Binnington is $6Mx3 more. Hayes $3.57Mx2. Buchnevich $5.8Mx1 more year.

I think a team could look at Buchnevich with 1.5 year left and really spend a bit more to make a move, especially if St.Louis retains.
I still think it might have been a miss for the Flames not more seriously shop Hanifin or Lindholm last trade deadline with retention, think teams would have really stepped up with big offers for those guys for 2 playoff runs.

Us Devils fans are just fine thank you. Going from perennial lottery team to being in the playoff race in March is progress.

You mentioning Reinhart being UFA made me look. Woof. ~$28MM in cap space next year with only 10 players signed. Unsigned players include Reinhart, Lundell, Montour, and Forsling. Not sure if all the players I haven't listed are key cogs. They are in it to win it this year, but next summer is going to be interesting for them. I'd say maybe that increases the odds of Lundell being on the market, but adding Hanifin doesn't help in that regard.

Agree. But really...whether it is deep analysis or quick and dirty analysis...it all comes up with the same thing: NJ's goaltending and lack of depth at D is killing them.
