If they win their games between now and then it's hard to say. You want to give yourself the best chance. But it would probably be wise.

No matter what they'll have to get used to life after Tanev and Hanifin.

Looking that that team and next year is going to be tough for them. $72M spent for next year already with only 13 players signed.

Foegele, Janmark, Brown, Gagner, Perry, Pickard, and Desharnais are all UFAs. Holloway is an RFA.

Foegele and Janmark have been very effective for them this season for a combined $3.75M
But you guys remember that month where Neal was on fire and the Lucic/Neal swap was the biggest trade win in history though, right?

Kypreos Update from Kyper & Bourne as they were comparing Lybushkin and Tanev as options for the Leafs and how much stronger Tanev is, but problem is Tanev's price and Conroy's asking price.

"What would interest Calgary in moving Tanev out? Maybe you have to move guys out to interest Calgary. Maybe it's a 5-player trade? Maybe it's Mangiapane? So, now it's Tanev and Mangiapane, but now you have to throw a sweetener in there. What would excite Calgary? Maybe it's Minten, I don't know where they sit on Minten. Maybe it's Holmberg too? I would anticipate that Calgary would be a lot more interested if Holmberg is included. You got to understand though that Calgary is asking for a 1st rounder and to date, nobody is offering that and there's a good chance that between now and Friday that nobody offers a 1st. So what I'm saying is, every other team is offering a 2nd rounder right now, but the Leafs don't have a 2nd rounder, so what else can the Leafs sweeten you with? Timmins, Robertson, and Holmberg enough for UFA Tanev? No? Okay. But that's the type of deal that Brad has to throw them until Conroy says Yes."

They go on to talk about the concern with Tanev being how battle-tested he is and then potentially having to extend him to make the deal worth it, also about including Mangiapane with Tanev and how they love Breadman, but wonder if he's too much like Bertuzzi. Then they go on to the other good prospects they could include in the deal like people like Chadwick, Niemala? And they say there's not one name that they wouldn't move for Tanev + Mangiapane except for Cowan, but they're not Tre.

No, not done IMO. Minten is very Lazar-ish to me and that first is gonna be late. You should be able to get that return for just Tanev. Mangiapane, with retention, should be able to return assets at next year's trade deadline.

Middle six wingers don't move for much at the deadline. Centres and D are the ones with high values.

I expect we would get a second for Mangiapane next deadline at best. Why not get it now and open up a roster spot for the kids?

(No opinion of Minten)

I would hold out for a 1st for Tanev, if possible. I'd rather try for a contract year bump for Mangiapane with another summer to heal his shoulder and see if he can get you a 2nd+ next year. I think I'd rather get that kind of return than Minten.

If Mangiapane's shooting percentage rebounds just to career average levels, he'll have a big boost in production next season.

Haha Kyper show. Yesterday they were going on and on about Toronto should give up their first for tanev because someone will by deadline. 24 hours later a different tune.

Fair enough! I have Minten higher than that

Draisatl strikes me as someone who wants to go to New York or a California team.

Isn't Kopitar up in LA as well?

That’s the same Kypreos that was lamenting at how a team hadn’t stepped up with a 1st yet for Tanev and how he was shocked that the leafs hadn’t. A day later and now it’s looking like no one will? lol I don’t buy it, especially with as many as 10 to 12 teams interested in his services. Sounds like more classic leafs media trying to help lessen the cost; it’s laughable to think that a retained Tanev + Mangi would only net a 1st and Minten, not only would the cap not work but that’s a laughable offer at best.

Problem is that this is now two seasons in a row where he's been way below that 19% season. I think he has another 20 goal season in him but I would caution that what he's been the past few seasons is a lot closer to what he is than 21/22 which was clearly his career season. That said I believe they can get more for Mangiapane next season anyway in the last year of his deal as a pure rental player.

It was part of a few proposed, Funkhouser posted them back in the thread at the start of the day. Literally polar opposite of the ESPN type proposals lol.

Personally, of these options, I would push for the Boston option but try to get picks (one first or two seconds) along with Lohrei.

Even with that shooting percentage he is a first line winger in terms of even strength scoring. Great candidate for the Leafs to buy low on, Conroy should fire sale him to clear out contract and get something for everyone.

It’s got to include a first. Chris Tanev is the top defencemen available on the market. I can’t believe so many teams are so scared to give up a 25th overall pick all of a sudden. Especially in a weaker draft. Teams have been giving these things away for way worse players for years. Really hope a team like Vegas or Dallas steps up and pays a premium for him and goes on to win the cup with him. Would serve teams like Vancouver and Toronto right for trying to nickel-and-dime Conroy for arguably the best shut down defenceman in the league.

Ben freaking Chiarot landed a first +

I know Tanev is older than Ben was when he landed that but at 50 percent retained and the season Chris is having I can’t believe a team hasn’t stepped up yet.

imo Casey, Dahl, 1st for a non-extended Hanifin isn't a terrible offer. Same with the TB offer. It's different if it's a sign and trade.

Agreed that Tanev should snag a late 1st. Savard, Chiarot... numerous examples of worse players snagging that return.
