So that's ~$9.8M wasted on that team in the final year of Draisaitl's contract.
Looking that that team and next year is going to be tough for them. $72M spent for next year already with only 13 players signed.
Foegele, Janmark, Brown, Gagner, Perry, Pickard, and Desharnais are all UFAs. Holloway is an RFA.
Foegele and Janmark have been very effective for them this season for a combined $3.75M

You absolutely love to see it. And next year they enter Leon's last year, correct?

Yes. They will either have to get him to commit to a new contract prior to the season, or risk him walking at the end of the season for nothing.
A frustrating end to this season makes him walking to UFA more likely. A 4-1 loss in round 1 would be *chefs kiss*

Maybe if the Flames beat the Kings tonight the Kings will want to make a trade

The Flames also control his ability to sign an 8 year deal where he wants to

Yeah you have Draisaitl as a UFA after 24/25, and then Mcleod and Bouchard as RFAs coming out of 24/25.
So in the last year with all three of those guys on cheap contracts you are blowing $9.8M of cap space.
Even if they manage to keep all three, it's going to probably going to take about an increase of $12M of salaries to keep them all...and then McDavid is UFA after the following year and will have a big raise.
Draisaitl: $8.5M > $12-13M
McLeod: $2.1M > $4-5M
Bouchard: $3.9M > $9-10M

Draisaitl won't stay. He'll go to whomever opens their bank vault for him. He'll want $14M for 8 years. Someone will come close. He'll also provide 85-90 points per year on that contract. He's only scoring huge in Edmonton due to situational circumstances. He won't do the same elsewhere.

The best thing is the turmoil that it potentially will cause in the media to every city he goes to and asked about his contract status. It will drive him nuts and we will get vintage Pissy. The local media will be in crisis mode trying to tell the fateful that the sky isn't falling.

Didn't see the original comment you quoted, but I assume you are referring to Hanifin. If so I it my understanding that if a player is on a team prior to the last trade Deadline they can sign him to an 8 year extension.
So if Hanifin is traded by March 7th, he would be able to sign 8 years with the team he is on.
But yes, if the Flames don't trade him until the 8th, then he can only sign a 7-year deal.

Then they’ll just wait until the offseason. Maybe look into Gibson or another option as well.

As long as he's traded this year I think he can sign for 8 years with the new team...if he walks to July 1 with the Flames then it would be 7 years only

I believe the wording is that the player has to be on the roster ‘as of and since’ the trade deadline. So even if a trade goes through with one minute left on the clock, Hanifin will be eligible for an 8-year extension with his new team.

He's been underpaid his entire career and will likely seek to be the highest paid player in the league. As with a lot of European players he will probably be looking to play in the USA.

Established, good teams won’t have the cap to afford the salary Draisatl is going to command. I expect he’ll go to a team emerging from a rebuild, like Anaheim or Detroit.

To reiterate what others have said, if Hanifin is traded before the trade deadline he would be able to sign for 8 years with the acquiring team after the trade deadline.

The other question is, how many more games will Tanev dress before he is scratched
Flames have 3 more games, after tonight's game before the trade deadline
My guess his last game is Saturday, then he is scratched.

I think the only way they scratch him is if they lose a couple in a row. If they feel like they're still in it, they will play him until the end.

I'm not so sure, Flames in my view will trade Tanev and Hanifin.
This is their top pairing dman
That will effect their playoff chances either way.

I'm guessing but a guy like Holtz, although talented, likely isn't on the want or need list.
We will get our young centerman sometime over the next 6 months, they probably have 2 to 3 targets, likely Mercer is one of them but who knows.
I hope heads don't explode here when some of these draft picks are sent away in a trade to acquire a known piece at the draft.
|
I could see this as a reason on why they would wait till summer to trade Markstrom. If he is as big as a bargaining chip like the rumours suggest, flames could hold out until they get a young centre back in deal. Maybe flames take a tiny less than the rumoured holtz deal to make sure they get that young centre.
