That’s the difficulty with dealing Hanifin. If you want to get full value, you want him to go to a team that has a good chance to sign him. But most teams in playoff contention will have trouble fitting an $8+ mil d-man into their cap structure going forward. Especially a LHD.
|
I do agree with you there but I think a team will step up today and ask questions tomorrow if Hanifin confirms he’d extend. Pieces like Hanifin don’t come along too often, just like Tkachuk. Now obviously the contract situation is different than Tkachuk as well as the time the trade would go down so we aren’t getting true high end established players back but I do think a team will step up with a 1st, blue chip and young roster player with ceiling to be met.

Is what it is.
I don't get wrapped up in returns, ... just do the best you can with the market at hand.
I think the bullet is dodged and the retool saved just by the fact that they didn't sign Toffoli for 6 years and Lindholm for 8.

This is key. I don't want to crap on those players now they are gone but those contracts would have likely aged poorly. The organization simply has to make the best of the picks and prospects they get out of this season and move on as the ebbs and flows of the market is out of their control. I still feel that the prices will be there as it's just a matter of the first team to go all-in and there will be a few teams that go for it in this game of deadline poker.

I don't think its that teams don't have much to offer, its that what we want will likely put them in a deficit in assets and cap crunches.
Imagine the Flames squeezing in Stone that TDL, no Andersson or Kylington no draft picks and a cap crunch with him and Tkachuk.

I actually don't see a lot of difference between Lindholm and Hanifin to be honest.
That year is a bit of an outlier IMO, and he was playing on one of the best regular season teams in NHL history.
If you look at the whole body of work I think they are probably pretty close to being equal.

The only two on that entire list that are clear and direct upgrades are McAvoy and Hedman.

It's also why I feel like if the rumoured Holtz+1st+Casey package offered is true then the Flames would be foolish not to take it for Markstrom.
You need to move Markstrom to make sure your pick is top 10 next year, and if that package is true is way better value than you would have expected even 2-3 months ago.
It would really help soften the blows of soft returns for Hanifin and Tanev, if you could get a great package for Markstrom.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
All this being said, and after listening to Flames Talk yesterday, if I wasn't already of this opinion I'd be sitting Tanev starting tonight and considering sitting Hanifin pretty soon as well.
Both of these delas may well go down to the morning of the 8th and I'd hate to see them playing these guys up until the night before. Sitting them out 4 games isn't the end of the world at this point, or an enormous disservice or insult to the player IMO. This is whats best for the club at this point.

Yeah me neither.
Both quality players (Lindholm in an odd funk this season though).
Those two on shorter term deals and you'd have to look at it. But the team missed the playoffs last year with both of them ... just didn't make sense to add to the Kadri / Huberdeau age out pile.

You won't solve the question above in two weeks.
All you'll solve is what the market for Noah Hanifin is right now ... whether he's a 1, 2 or 3.

I think some of the speculation on this board has gotten hopes of returns way out of line with what we are going to see.
The Lindholm trade was top-shelf, they aren't all going to be like that.

Realistic and awful. Fans need to get prepared that we're not getting massive overpays in these deals. We're not getting Mercer. We're not getting Bourque or Stankoven. We're not getting Lundell.

The crazy thing is that Lindy was having by far his worst season in a long time on the heels of a prior season that was a drop-off that was expected. Hanifin on the other hand is as good as he’s ever been and seems to be ascending to another level. He should at least return what Lindy did but I guess we will see how the market plays out. Looking forward to the dust settling to see what we’re left with ahead of the draft!

We won't know what the real value of these deals are until 3 years down the road. I know its fun to dig in, but these roster players for futures deals normally need us to zoom out.
