Leafs are future asset poor and picking higher than that.
They'll still move their 1st for Tanev. Its happening. Programming like this on Roger's owned sportsnet is getting fans ready for the deal.

I would say yes. That said rumour has it the devils won’t include mercer in any deals so far.

Then what’s the point of waiting? They don’t have a 2nd so it’s not like they can wait for that.

Well
There are those here who would rather have a draft pick than either of those

Game of chicken. Wait long enough, maybe Conroy panics and lowers his ask.

So why not maximize their return now to a sucker who may not mind making a mistake. Not too different than how Anaheim may be viewing Zegras currently. Learning organizations are a step ahead of others.

Kyrou already has the long term contract and franchise money though. Why not move Thomas as well if they are going to do a tear down.

Edit: Just saw Blaster's response above. Weird, I thought with a competitive team, Vancouver would actually be a pretty desired location (all things considered) vs. a smaller market team like Calgary / Edmonton / Winnipeg, especially for European players who you don't need to worry about pining to play in their home countries.
|
Probably hates one of the Sedins. Not both of them because it would be funnier if he only hates one of them enough to not re-sign there.
ETA: Plus he can never figure out which one he hates.

Not only are you trading away an 18 year old asset for a 22 year old asset and getting older, you're improving the 2024-2025 roster to (potentially) a point that will cost the Flames a top-10 pick rather than a pick in the high 30s.
Would you still do that? I certainly wouldn't. I would be patient while drafting and developing our own players.
These one-off moves can be viewed as fine, but the Flames need to approach it with a broader perspective - and timing is important.
|
They aren’t really shortcutting the process if they are using extra assets to get younger players with upside. I don’t think too many players that will materially impact the standings will be available for a late 1st either but if they are you take them and sell Kuzmenko/Mangiapane/Backlund/Markstrom and make the roster worse that way.

I get that part. That goes for everyone trying to get tanev. But again they don’t have a 2nd. Is he hoping that it drops to a 3rd? There are already 2nd round picks on the table from other teams

Alternatively. I wonder if the Wings and Flames can frame out a deal that lands Edvinsson.
They're shopping for a winger. We need LHD to replace Hanifin...
Balance out the value on the Wings side and ship Mang with Vans 1st.

|
You think Hanifin extended for 8 years is only worth Casey + 2nd? You are either drastically overvaluing Casey or severely undervaluing Hanifin. Or maybe a bit of both.
A fully extended Hanifin would bring in an absolute haul, imo. Multiple picks, multiple prospects, as well as a roster player (or two). Heck, even as a pure rental he likely brings in more than a prospect and a pick.

It's funny because you see all these "he's been so bad " posts, and then when you look at his season:
5v5 Points: 24 (3rd amongst Flames Forwards)
Individual expected Goals: 11.3 (2nd)
Individual High Danger Chances: 59 (1st)
xGF%: 52.89% (4th)
HDCF%: 55.4% (1st)
GF%: 52.8% (5th)
Still driving great on ice results, and driving high danger chances, but struggling with his individual finishing with only 6 goals on an expected goals of 11.
|
Be interested to see how his numbers look without Backlund.

I wonder if it’s indeed possible to land Edvinsson, with the depth the Wings have on D- Wallinder, Viro, Buium, Sandin-Pelikka…
They could move one of those players, and not miss a beat….
