Fitz's job might be in jeopardy if he is responsible for losing a wildcard spit due to his ego getting in the way of a goalie trade two weeks ago. I couldn't imagine convoys ask against retention would be that much of a stumbling block.

The interesting part might be that LA has more positionally appealing players than jersey, in turcotte and Spence. They could be the better partner anyway.

Well selling Markstrom was just going to be gravy anyways that’s why I was more than fine with a lower return, but good on Conroy for trying to get the best deal he can, you absolutely can’t fault him for that. Plus Fitz would’ve actually looked good had he done the trade when rumoured, they could be in a playoff spot right now but he didn’t have the guts. No way Markstrom returns anything close to what was rumoured going forward if NJ is out, and that’s fine they’re rumours for a reason.
Let’s trade Tanev/Hanafin for hauls and try to make the playoffs with Markstrom stealing games.
Conny just needs to grab one serviceable D from one of those trades, ideally a cap dump player that is still decent and we get an additional asset for taking.
Let’s face it Flames won’t give up, their D is gna be abysmal without Tanev or Hanafin, so they may naturally tank, but Markstrom is gna keep us in games and our effort level and vibes are good enough to win against anyone.

Even if Conroy does not do it this year there should be at least 3 teams that need goaltending over the summer (4 if you include Edmonton who the Flames should not trade with because they are Edmonton and have no good young assets) who will not win the Stanley Cup this year but are in their window. Carolina, LA, Jersey and Edmonton. All with substandard goaltending. At most there will be 3 goalies available this summer. Seems like even if it goes to the summer there should be the circumstances for a bidding war with Markstrom still being arguably the best option available out of the three goalies (Ullmark, Saros, Markstrom) that presumably could be available.

You could throw Toronto in there as well.

Perhaps Philadelphia as well? They've overachieved this year, but with the issues with Hart, they might be willing to take on Markstrom for a couple seasons. I don't see Errson as a guaranteed future starter.

I know if I owned the Devils he would absolutely get his walking papers if I missed out on playoff revenue this season with that roster. The fact he gave a crappy coach an extension as well wouldn't help his cause.

They made it to the second round last year with those goaltenders and coach. Now they have Toffoli too.
They had bad luck with injuries for a while, happens. If he is getting fired it should be for the Timo Meier debacle, not for refusing to pay the farm for Markstrom.

They made it to the second round because Andrew Brunette took over the offence. Tell me what Lindy Ruff has ever done with NJ as head coach other than last year? Every team has injuries, that roster is still extremely strong minus goaltending.

I don't know, you'd probably be better off asking DoubleK. I rarely watch their games if they aren't playing Calgary.
The same roster including goaltending made it to the second round and they were young. Not sure you can blame them for trying to run it back.

Never sell the farm just to save your job or make the playoffs for one season. The price didn't make sense for NJ and Calgary, so no deal was done.
We've be furious at Conroy if we were in NJ's position and gave up Mercer +++ for Markstrom. We will probably revisit in the summer.

How is he “selling the farm to save your job or make the playoffs for one season” in February but not doing the exact same thing if he tries to acquire the same player in July?
All he’s doing is getting one less playoff run out of Markstrom. Instead of 3, it’s 2. And the Flames have zero reason to reduce the price. Especially if Markstrom ends up as a Vezina finalist.

We were in NJ's position for about 6 years. It wasted the ELCs of our last core as well as 2 Norris caliber seasons from Gio. Knowing how that ended, I would love to go back in time and trade Bennett + or Mangiapane + for a 34 year old having a Vezina calibre season signed for 2 more years.

Well, we're going off of the assumption that NJ is not willing to meet Calgary's price for retention. Retention is needed this season to fit Markstrom into their current roster (and also get a him at a discount rate for the next 2 seasons).
In the summer, salary cap goes up, Toffoli and others walk to FA, so retention might not be needed. At that time, NJ might be ok to acquire Markstrom for the full price without retention that they were allegedly close on.
And, more goalies might be available in the summer, giving NJ more options if they don't feel like paying the price Calgary is asking for. Saros, Ullmark, FA goalies, etc.
And, part of Markstrom's appeal is how well he's playing THIS season. You go into the off-season and who knows what he's going to be like as a 35 year old next year.
It's what we've been talking about for literally the last 50 pages.

If Mercer is your farm you have a very mediocre farm. Starting goalies never get traded in this league because they are the most valuable commodity, not because they have no value. A lot of posters seem to think that you can run anyone at that position and find success. That is almost never true.

The deal was good for jersey without retention, rumored to be Holtz, 1st and an off the radar piece. I'd be good with that if I was calgary, and reportedly they were.
Asking 25% retention, and not paying the price of a 2nd or Casey, or whatever, after the heavy lifting had already been done, is silly.

A deal is not done, so the "farm" is clearly not just Mercer. In other words, whatever we are asking for is too much for NJ.
