Goaltending affects a teams ability to score. Flames often score shortly after Markstrom makes a save that Devils goalies are not making. Depending how good the goalie is the players also play differently, if they don’t have trust in their ability to stop pucks then they will be playing more conservatively or just changing the way they would usually play resulting in mistakes and mis communication

It's a lot easier to score when you're not hyper anxious about your own end.

I disagree and I actually watch the games.

It also explains why the deal didn't get done when the media was all hot and heavy that a deal was imminent.

Sometimes the stat lines don't tell the whole story.

There’s still two weeks to the deadline, I don’t think it’s as dead as a lot of posters seem to think. Analytically speaking Goaltending has been a soft spot for NJ all year, I’ve followed them myself this year more than others because I’ve been juggling their goaltenders in my hockey pool all year waiting for the team to hit the stride that it should be hitting.

According to moneypuck

GSAA
Markstrom 18.1 (3rd)

Dawes -1.2 (49th)
Schmid -3.9 (61st)
Vanecek -11.2 (89th)

I think its safe to say Markstrom is an upgrade.

I'd be very surprised if NJ punts on the season. I just can't see that going over very well in their room, front office, owner's box, fan base. There's pressure in that market to make a move, no doubt. Everyone understands the finite quality of a good young core, and I think the Devil's understand more than most the benefits of making winning central to their team ethos. Saying maybe next year would damage that.

I have to wonder how much input Brodeur has here. This is a guy that surely bristles at the notion that goalies are largely interchangeable low value assets. He also just told everyone his top 5 goalies in the league list... Yes, markstrom is on it. He will be a devil in 2 weeks. I'd bet on it.

But do you watch the games though?

I’m just playing too DoubleK, I know you don’t want to see an overpay here. But we really, really do!

Reminds me of Luongos first stint in Florida where he was making 50+ saves a night and still losing 2-1 on a non playoff team

10 goals on 40 shots against in the last 5 periods? That seems to tell its own story.

Lanny_McDonald if any trade went down...

What an underwhelming return, just like I predicted.

Conroy sure did **** this up by underplaying his hand. You need to understand your target. Missing their window is a massive fail as that was the leverage. Hold out until NJ pays your price. There was no need to rush the trade for the Stadium Series game, he should have waited until closer to the deadline. Missing this window is a massive mistake, one Conroy should be publicly executed for. The market for Markstrom was only going to get better closer to the deadline.

Ok
Let’s get this going
Only one more trade will be made this year
Who will it be?
Tanev or Hanifin?

Why hasn’t Vladar been waived yet? I know he’s a decent enough goalie and still has potential but the opportunity lost to have Wolf shadowing Markstrom day in and day out and learning from one of the best is worth more.

Wolf is so done with the AHL, the tests that he gets there now are not preparing him for the NHL. Nobody there can complete a pass, and nobody can pick corners. Every game he keeps playing there is a waste of time at best and reinforcing bad habits at worst.

Get a move on this already.

Not saying that I don’t think he can
But
I like to see him show some NHL competency first

Earlier in the process(tm) I thought there should be an urgency for the Flames to make a deal. Because in the summer, more options would open up for NJ.

As we get more tidbits of information it sounds like Markstrom is who they want. It doesn't help their cause that Saros is going to cost more in the summer. Much more than a Markstrom with some of his salary being paid by Calgary. But even still, Markstrom is their man.

So that makes it pretty easy for Conroy in my opinion. This is the price, you can either pay it now, or pay it in the summer. Up to you. This is the price.

If that's a problem, good luck finding another top 5 goalie in tbe league for 4 million bucks for 2 more years.

Aside from the personal implications with Markstrom, Conroy is and should be in full control.

I'm probably in the minority, but I think Vladar still has decent upside potential. If Markstrom gets traded, I would like to see him get 10-15 games straight to see what he looks like with a bigger work load. Some goalies need that to really show if they can be consistent and Vladar has shown decent flashes in the past, but it can't be easy coming in cold all the time. What's the worst that can happen? We lose and get a higher draft pick? He wins and we get another tradeable asset?
