I'll never understand why people make up their own narratives for these things

The retention is not being compensated in the Flanes view, so that means the deal really isn't agreed to. Devils have to add or accept the cap hit.

Oh for sure I think it could be revisited in the summer but if retention is the sticking point not much will change unless the Flames take enough cap back to not retain. Fits their MO better.

It does suck to have another trade get hyped and then fall apart lol. On to Hanifin and Tanev speculation

The problem is, you could acquire Markstrom today but due to immigration he probably can't play until next Friday's game in Anaheim (if you're lucky. Last year, Lazar took 8 days to get his visa after being acquired from Vancouver).
So, the Devils could acquire Markstrom today then proceed to lose to Montreal, Tampa Bay and San Jose. Season. Over. They almost need to at least see what the weekend brings at this point nevermind the complexities that might be surrounding the deal.
The other part is, Markstrom is 34. If you're truly done this year as far as playoffs are concerned, what kind of goalie is he going to be next season? You look at the decline of a goalie like Devan Dubnyk where he had a solid season at age 32/33 in 2018-19 but then dropped right off a cliff. Within two seasons, he was out of the league.
When will it happen for Markstrom? If I were to guess, I'd say probably not next season but would I give up all those assets based on my guess? I don't think so, not if I knew that I couldn't at least get a playoff run this year out of it.

That should say everything that needs to be said about markstrom and the Flames. They're not a playoff with him having the kind of season he is having. That's a core issue.
He's falsely inflating the quality of the roster in general with his play. While at the same time proving his worth at the contract value he has right now. Asking to retain 2 or 3 million makes his value spike. Even if your do a risk/reward analysis the reward is greater than the risk right now.
Flames don't need to move him but they should given everything else going on.

but that doesn't imply that the Flames had an unreasonable price for Markstrom (which is what was being discussed)

I don’t think his age really matters if the Devils almost got him. They clearly think he’ll be fine over the next two seasons. It’s not like they would acquire him to dump in the summer.

Yeah, but they almost got him at a point in time where acquiring him would save this season. It would take the sting out of losing a ton of assets if he did drop off a cliff. Now they don't have that safety net.

His age will matter in the offseason.
A desperate Flames team traded a backup Chad Johnson a C prospect Brandon Hickey and a conditional 3rd for 34 soon to be 35 year old Mike Smith with 2 years left.

Only stands to reason that you would be willing to pay more for 3 playoff runs, than 2. Which is why I don't see it getting done in the summer, because NJD won't be willing to pay as much, and the Flames have no motivation to take less.

Well let them trade for a Brian Elliott, than a year later need to trade for the next Mike Smith trying to find a cheap fix only to see 4 years go by and still not have a solution.

If it's true the Flames are focused on 2027 as the year to emerge from a rebuild, Markstrom's highest value to the team is his trade value. If you don't trade him this deadline, it has to be because you believe you can get a higher return later. Everything else is just noise.

I meant Markstrom to somewhere that wasn't rumored to be shopping.

there was a time where the collective quite liked Brandon Hickey. I realize your point is we gave up a whole lot of nothing for Smith but I remaining feeling like it was an overpay at the time
CP 2016 prospect rankings
https://www.calgarypuck.com/2016/08/...kings-summary/
interesting list to look at . there were 2 future superstars in the system (ranked 1 and 16) and then the next best players in some sort of order ranked 6, 9, 4, 12, 31, 18, 20, 2.... that is actually - I think- a very good group of prospects (for no top 5 picks) just that it wasn't all that clear which ones they were

And the false belief that the reason NJ is falling out of the race is goaltending.
They've laid 2 eggs since the outdoor game and the PP is 2/46 or something silly like that.

EDIT
|
100% right - Hickey was looked at favourably from us fans and even in the organization. I still remember Treliving announcing that Hickey will be signing soon... and then crickets. Refused to sign, and Calgary eventually traded him in that package. He never did amount to anything. He is still playing in the AHL, but has a grand total of zero NHL games, so it was nothing lost. Everyone forgets about Hickey, as it was a lot less noise, but he was one of the 3 recent defencemen to refuse to sign in Calgary, with Erixon and Fox being the other two.
This organization should really focus on making sure they draft as many Western Canadian prospects as possible. Erixon from Sweden, Fox from the USA. Hickey from... Alberta? Oh wait...
I think with both Erixon and Fox, they both wanted to play for the Rangers, and essentially forced their way there. Hickey at least just wanted an easier path? I can't imagine that he would hate living in Alberta, but who knows? I do agree the Smith acquisition seemed like an overpayment at the time, but I guess time proved that it wasn't the case.

26th in the league in goals against and 12th in goals for. I suspect goaltending is not helping them.

Goaltending or can't score?
