At the end of the day it doesn't really matter to me, because one way we end up with new and younger players, albeit on a crapshoot, and the other way we end up with a new and younger goalie, also on a crapshoot as to whether his skills translate to the NHL.

I think to your point, it's why Conroy is only willing to deal him for a great return.
- He has continued value to us if he remains our goalie, and I would agree Conroy is factoring in the mentor for Wolf situation as downside to moving him.
- Two, he is not a must trade now player. He's under contract moving forward, Conroy can be patient and only move him when the right deal comes along.
I think the urgency from many to move him now comes from a belief (a false belief IMO) that this is a unique window opportunity to trade him. I think mostly that stems from a fairly typical pessimism that Markstrom is just "hot right now". I think some it also might be a belief that there isn't always a market for goalies. I just don't agree with that. I believe Markstrom is a top goalie in this league, and will be next year and so on as well. I also believe there are always teams that need goaltending. Conroy can be patient on this one, which includes being patient well beyond this years trade deadline.

Unless they desperately need playoff revenue, it makes more sense to wait from their prespective if the demand is too high

If you think the time is next year why wouldn’t he just go for it this year as well to get that playoff revenue and young guy experience to see what they have? Is the price going to come down that much this offseason?

I don't think people are rushing to get rid of Markstrom just because.
Two things have come up.
1. Goalies just don't have this type of value, and New Jersey has a very pressing need and the rumoured package would be a great haul for a goalie. Goalies usually get moved for a mid round pick, even if they have strong stats.
2. The draft pick owed to Montreal. We can't have Markstrom stealing us games and keeping us out of the basement to have a top pick go to Montreal.

I'm not saying don't trade for Markstrom. I'm just saying they should not overpay.
Markstrom for Mercer, if that deal went down, I would be praising Conroy for the work he has done this year. That's a great trade, yet some want top prospects and 1sts added? NJ should walk away of that is the case.
I would add a mid-pick with Markstrom just to get Mercer/Holtz.

Sure and what's the cost for the Flames to retain 50% for the remainder of his contract? It's significant.

$6.375M had a cost of a 1st round pick two years ago.
Salary cap will be about $8M more than what that trade happened beginning next year, and $13M more the following year.
So the cost for retaining 50% of Markstrom’s salary (which, let’s call is $6.375M total, spread out over 2.25 seasons) shouldn’t really be this massive cost. I think you can safely call it at a 2nd + 3rd or somewhere around there but it shouldn’t be a 1st round pick.

I doubt the Flames do that though. They never retain salary in trades and now they are going to for 3 more years at $3 mil per season?
Max, I see they retain is 25% or take a contract back.
I could see the Flames trading Hanifin and then shortly after trading Markstrom for Seiganthaler and a 1st and guys like Mercer aren't even on the table.

Welll Devils legend and Devils vice-president of hockey operations says that Jacob Markstrom is a top 5 goalie in the league.
So I guess that's should be the basis of the trade value, they are getting a top 5 goalie based on their own managment teams rankings.

Trading Markstrom is bonus money because he's not moving for nothing. They want him, they can have him, for a price. That's been the story the entire time.
If he doesn't move, it's not a big deal.
Is it ideal if he moves as we gear down for the retool? Yes.
And his value will never be higher than it is right now. I don't know why retention would be an issue for the next two seasons. The plan is to run the youths with the sparkling of vets they have. They aren't going out and signing premium FAs for the next two years IMO.

Holtz or bust at least.
The surprise Wolf start and not getting yanked all tracks with the trade being pretty much done

If the top buying candidate isn’t meeting the price now, why would they meet it in the summer?

Because more teams will have decided they are a goalie away from success based on their results this year. Especially after the POs - someone is always unhappy with their goalie’s performance in a series. See Edmonton, Toronto, Calgary 2 years ago, etc.

The Flames likely don't have any RFAs that will break the bank in 2 years as well. Zary could get paid and maybe Coronato too but any picks from 2023 or 2024 will not be up before the retention is off the books. The Flames should look at retaining, they just haven't shown yet they will actually do it and that much.

Kylington needs a contract next year. He might command a similar price as the max retention.

But only Edmonton went out and blew money on a UFA goalie. Flames and Leafs didn't make any changes.
Vegas won the cup despite goalie issues all year. Teams just don't blow 1sts and good young players for 34-year-old goalies.
If the Flames can get a 1st or Mercer or Holtz, take it. It's not going to be 2 or 3 of that calibre pieces coming back.

Flames won't have cap issues for 2 years if they trade Hanifin and Tanev and Markstrom. They will be near the cap floor

That's not how hockey works though. Every goal changes the dynamic of the game.
And every bad goal against causes the players to die a little inside, when it happens too often, and you know your goaltending isn't good enough for you to win. It causes a let down, and it saps energy.
With a good goalie, you're in every game.
