I’m utterly shocked the NJ hasn’t pulled the trigger. They need a goaltender badly. They’ve gone down the path with the Flames where a deal in principle is available. Why are they dicking around and losing games in the meantime? It’s quickly becoming a do or die situation. If I were their owner I’d be kinda annoyed it hasn’t crossed that finish line. Every day they mess around it’s potentially costing them playoff revenue as well as pissed off players. I wish someone would shed light on the holdup.

Its so obvious what the issue is.

Marky was making big time saves last night to keep us in the game, and has been the only reason we are in the race.
It’s so weird too. Goalies that are on a run like Markstrom is rarely ever get traded mid-season. It’s very rare to have a simple fix to your biggest problem just available. Especially when your team has an abundance of young players and has been picking high in the draft for years. There is no player available in the trade market that could have a bigger impact on any team than Markstrom could for the devils right now.

Take the flames. For the first 5-6 years of the last competitive window, the flames were constantly looking for a solution to their goaltending (until they got Markstrom). I can’t think of any point in that time where a top five goalie in the league was available for trade in the middle of the season. Imagine if, at the time the flames were struggling along with different goalies year after year, someone like Vasilevskiy or Rinne was made available. It’s an obvious move and for Jersey to make the decision to just keep allowing goaltending to be their weakness is foolish with the roster they have entering their competitive window. There are plenty of teams that never reached their potential because they never committed to addressing their goaltending problems.

Kevin Weekes was on TSN on Monday. He said he spoke with Brodeur and that he said they need a goalie, and people inside the organization want Markstrom.

I think it is really over retention. Who knows if the Flames have too high of a price or the Devils are low balling but seems like they agreed on the value of Markstrom.

Kevin Woodley (goalie guru) was on with Steinberg yesterday. He said the way the Devils plays Markstrom is the perfect goalie for their system.

Tom is falling asleep at the wheel here.

Wonder who will start against the oilers tomorrow. Markstrom is on a roll but this is the only road game in a long stretch of home games. He had a really taxing game against the bruins last night with multiple acrobatic saves so he could use the rest. Plus Vladar has not played in a while so he is due for a start. And Markstrom has struggled against the oilers.

I’m sure our speculation on this thread will go crazy again if Markstrom sits but it does seem like a game that it would make a sense to give a start to Vladar.

You always take the risk of a player potentially not wanting to stay. In Zegras' case I think it would be high.

I guess if you got him for cheap it wouldn't be the end of the world but I would hate to give up something significant only to be forced to move him because he doesn't want to be in Calgary.

If the Devils truly believe Daws may be the goalie of the future they need to acquire a proven commodity immediately. A run for the playoffs can be a wrecking ball to a young goalie’s confidence. It appears there is already some fraying in the ranks and the next 7 weeks could really do a number on Daws if the Devils just keep him in the fire.

It will cost them, but Jersey can avoid a lot of both present and future pain if they acquire a proven guy to handle the load and shepherd Daws.

Shocking if the plan is to only plan for this year. If you are the Devils, do you think you can win the cup this year with Hamilton hurt and L Hughes and Nemec as rookie dmen? They are a very young team and maybe they just don't think this year is their year. Next year is more likely, so why cave in to Conroy's demands when you could make a move in the summer.

Unless they desperately need playoff revenue, it makes more sense to wait from their prespective if the demand is too high

Yeah I'm also surprised it hasn't happened

Markstrom (25% retention / $1.5M retained)
Rooney/Duehr

for

Mercer/Holtz
2024 1st Round Pick (transfers to 2025 if it's a top 10 pick, or if Devils make ECF (the pick then goes to San Jose))
Casey
Vanecek

Seems like something that would be good for both sides.

I hope for nothing but the worst for the Devils and may their future be full of regret.

Yeah my feeling is if it doesn’t happen soon, it’s not going to happen at all.

I would start Vladar if the trade talk is still brewing

Interesting. Could totally be that the window is closing.

But i feel the exact opposite. Pressure is building on these teams that need to improve in standings or shore up a hole in the line-up otherwise they go no where in the playoffs. Look what Ruff just said about his PP.

Still time left.

So far there has been a host of reasons this fell apart from a variety of sources both internal to CP and externally abroad from hockey insiders within media.

- Flames were unhappy with the media leak and the deal fell through in part to annoyance from that
- Flames ask is too much, Mercer is a no go
- Flames unwilling to retain on contract or aren’t happy with the offer for retaining

I think if there is this much smoke, it’s bound to get done, especially for the recent Brodeur sound bites of Marky recently. The reasons above are all valid for why this hasn’t gotten across the finish line, I also think Conroy is a savvy GM early on here looking to make a name for himself. He’s not going to take these decisions lightly and I’m applauding his firm hand so far, it will be very important to keep the ship steady as he navigates the retool and I think he’s creative enough to make it happen.

The Devils are basically in the same spot as the Flames right now with playoffs. Do they bet on Markstrom taking them on a big winning streak if they lose these next two games or just wait till the offseason.

It’s important to get those young players into playoff games, and not get them comfortable with writing off the season.

Honestly, if I was managing the Devils, I wouldn't bother making any big deals to try and save the season. They are 5 points out, but so are 2 other teams. They have 2 games in hand, but even then, it's hard to make up points in the standings especially when other teams are right there with them.

If I were them, I would just revisit the issue in the off season.
