Plus trades like that are how Ottawa got Stuetzle (pick from San Jose in Karlsson trade) and Colorado got Byram (pick from Ottawa in Duchene trade). Draft picks that were 2 years away and ended up being high picks because good teams were on their way down. It was a gamble but really less of a gamble than trading a player to a team for a 2024 first round pick that you know for sure will be outside the top 20 in a weaker draft.

Teams learned from those mistakes.
Even TB lottery protected the two first round picks traded to Chicago.

The Byram pick was lottery protected so lottery protection does not always work.

That’s fine if they end up putting lottery protection on the pick. If Tampa or Boston were picking at the top of the draft in 2026 and it meant the pick was pushed to 2027, there’s a decent chance their 2027 first round pick would also be high in the draft. That’s the general trend for most teams that finish at the bottom. It takes a couple years before they move up the standings again.

That's exactly the type of management this team has been starving for for eternity

The draft as a whole is essentially gambling. You can better your odds through scouting and volume of picks. But there are no guarantees.
Just look back through the Flames drafts. How many first rounders never turned into anything. How many fourth rounders did ect.

So I just checked in and from my source Noah Hanifin has not indicated to anyone he will only sign in TB. Noise is he wants to see what is available to him come free agency but I have no idea where in the hell FS got this info from. It does kind of piss me off because if he is putting that out there I would hope GM's would do their homework and ask Conroy and not worry about what he is saying. It also bothers me because personally I have respect for Frank Seravalli but he seems to be trying to downplay our assets for some reason publically. I don't know what his end goal is in that regard or if he is just getting fed info from someone trying to hurt our market but I am not buying what he is currently selling.

Nothing right now on Markstrom. I think both sides have made clear what they want, for now it is quiet there.

Once a player gets close to his once in a lifetime chance at UFA, it’s not surprising for a player to see how it plays out.
The exception is when a player has one choice he loves, like Stone and Vegas.

I thought about this a lot lately and I doubt the GMs game plans are changed because a reporter shares false information on TV, a podcast or their social media accounts. If that does happen it's a good bet that GM is taken advantage of in trades and doesn't last long.

Feels like NJ is falling out of the playoff picture and really has no reason to trade for Markstrom.

Oh I wouldn’t be so sure. I’m sure they’re watching and reading what’s put out there publicly…
FS definitely seems like he’s working with some kind of agenda. It is weird at this point.

They're 5 points of back of 3rd in the Met with a game in hand, 5 points back of WC1 with 2 games in hand, and 4 points back from WC2 no games in hand.
Doesn't feel like they're falling out at all. Feels like they need a goalie ASAP to push them over the edge and secure a playoff position.

Fans care about the stuff pundits like Seravalli say. But it has zero impact on the deals that NHL management teams make.

Honest question: Is he truly a pundit/analyst/insider or a shock jock whose sole focus is driving traffic to his website?
I don't recall him being asked on any of the SiriusXM NHL Network shows, and can't say the last time I've seen him on TV since he moved to DFO. (I moved to the US, he definitely hasn't been on ESPN/TNT.)
It is conceivable that it's his choice, but I find that hard to believe.
