BUT
That is under the notion that we are only trading Markstrom here, meaning we still potentially have Hanifin and Tanev to trade for more pieces yet.
|
It would be interesting to see what kind of return packaging either Hanifin or Tanev with Markstrom would return. In that case, the idea of getting Mercer + 1st + 3rd + B prospect sounds more realistic.

Didn't the comment from Freidman also kind of make it seem that the New Jersey offer could really expedite the retool.

Mercer for me. Flames need players with top 6 C potential desperately.

But it could also not be.
I'll take door #1. Mercer is NHL proficient already and a C. Flames need that.

It could also be the pick that’s used with Vancouver’s to move up and get Iginla regardless

I still can't decide as to whether I think Mercer or Holtz is better
Holtz gets 2.226 points per 60 minutes played (even strength). Mercer only gets 1.713.
The difference is even larger in terms of even strength production.
For comparison's sake, Holtz would be the 5th most productive player on the Flames after Coleman, Kadri, Sharangovich and Zary. Mercer would be around the same as Pospisil.
Mercer is underperforming. Last year, he produced 2.474 points per 60 minutes player. That's around the same as what Kadri and Lindholm did last year.
I think Holtz probably has the higher upside, but Mercer is more versatile and proven. I wouldn't be surprised if the Devils are more willing to trade Mercer due to his struggles this year. A good buy low candidate, similar to Kuzmenko.

I think the Iggy Jr. pick comes through Tanev or Hanifin.

Mercer makes the most sense. If the Devils want to be a contender, they need a goalie, need a veteran d man to mentor their young d and really could use a veteran 3rd line center behind the 2-star centers.
They aren't winning with 3 centers that are 22 to 25 years old. Pittsburgh did it, but Crosby is on a different level than their centers. Most teams don't win with 3 guys that young at that important of a position.
If they can land Makrstrom for Mercer and a 2nd, they could target a veteran 3rd line center to replace Mercer.

Not that high for the best rental center to move in a while.

Brz "Adam fox of the OHL" a future bust. We'll bookmark that one for a couple years from now.
A 1st is a 1st. Canucks will choke as they always do, bumping the selection up.
It's 5 pieces that will enter the flames system for the foreseeable future for 3 months of Lindholm.
|
The Cap Dump is a previously 39 goal scorer whose seemed to unlock Huberdeau. He has offensive talent and is well liked guy in the room. If it works out great, if not we flip him next deadline. This isn't a Ryan reeves bench warmer type salary dump.

It was a bad trade for Washington, but to be fair, Forsberg had yet to play an NHL game at that point. Mercer is a 22 year old established NHL player with 124 points in 216 games.
Erat was a really consistent producer up until the year he was traded and was seen as a good leader. I get why Washington, given where they were at the time, gave up a mystery box for him at the time. It just backfired.

Getting Mercer or Holtz for Marky, and then perhaps trading Hanifin for someone like Lundell... Man.
Mercer/Holtz, Lundell(?), Zary, Pospisil, Pelletier, Sharangovich, Kuzmenko, with Coronato and Honzek in the wings... That would be a major youth and skill injection in a short amount of time.
That along with like 3 first round picks in the draft... Oh yeah. Make it happen.

That's an whole future 2nd line.
Also, weren't Mercer and Coronato taken back to back? Or was that Sillinger I'm thinking of.
