Vanacek can be bought out next year. Don't see how he factors in the deal and isn't a decision point on Markstrom's retention.

Just don’t #### them up.
Feaster went 1/3 in 2013 - Monahan, Poirier, Klimchuk.
He could have taken Theodore and Hartman.
Having those 1sts completely bust out set them back as much as anything.
Walk away from this draft with a top-10 centre plus two or three other contributing NHLers and 2027 isn’t an unreasonable target for a quality team.

Conroy said rebuilding in a sound bite.

Well he has been playing top 6 RW I think which helps. I think he ends up as a top 6 C myself, I just think worse case scenario he is a really good 3 C.

I bet the Flames offered retaining $1 million per season ($3 million total) and the Devils wanted $3 million per season ($9 million total). IMO, that $9 million total retention should be worth two first round picks considering what Monahan cost the Flames and also the fact that Markstrom is actually good.
A deal probably gets done with retention somewhere in between.
|
Since it seems like Murray hates retaining, I bet they're gunning for a goalie contract coming back to balance the books instead (who will likely be buried next season, or serve as backup to wolf if vladar is gone), Mercer, and a 2nd/B prospect.
I think swinging for Mercer + 1st + dump is a great place to start for the flames (and probably was), even if the place you end up is less than that (but with Mercer being the must).

With the way he has played this year even with retention I am not sure adding Mangiapane moves any needle for NJ. They don't really need another winger let alone one that falls more than he scores.

Calgary would have to add a lot to get a haul like that.

His floor is probably a 3rd line C.

He is Backlund jr. he’ll replace Bread on the wing and learn from the master. In three years he’ll be 2/3 C just like Backs.

I really think we are going to be happy with the return from NJ if this deal does ultimately get done. I believe that NJ really, really wants him.
Ever gone to the car dealership with a budget in mind, but you overshoot it by a mile because you sit in that vehicle and love it? When you really want something it is easy to rationalize that payment. I think this is going to happen here, the Devils covet this goalie (for good reason) and ultimately they will pay a significant price for him.

I think his immediate salary is certainly a decision impacting NJ. And the fact he can be bought out is why I'd prefer him.
I think you are figuring this from a NJ perspective, but do you really think they want to run Vanacek and Markstrom? I don't.

I think you will change your mind when the deal gets done. If the deal gets done. I think it will but I don't want to speak in absolutes or certain posters will start shredding me on here.

This also isn't being considered in the speculation.
What if the Flames are adding Tanev as a means to get the return they're looking for? (1st + mercer)

As usual, CP has its sights set on someone and as such, Mercer is being overvalued on this board and Mang, undervalued.
Between the two in the same number of games, Mangiapane plays on his team’s most trusted line 5 on 5 and would be an absolute steal at 35% retained salary. He has more points this season and has scored 35 in this league and is +8 this year and has never been a minus player in his entire career (+53), while Mercer is -17 in his NHL career.
People treating Mangiapane as some worthless throw in are being ignorant to what his play-driving style consistently brings to his team.

I agree with dissentower, the return will be quite good. Don’t forget that Flames have no reason to deal Markstrom other than for a huge overpay.
