Nope. That’d defeat the purpose of retention and be mega abused

Don’t really see Hanifin as a need for New Jersey. Feels like they are mashing multiple rumours together to get clicks

I can't be the only fan that would just be excited to see Markstrom traded for a positive return before his play nosedives.

It's not like NHL clubs have seven-figure slush funds that they can just spend on anything without the league and PA noticing. That would defeat the entire purpose of the salary cap.

Obviously because Nemec is the piece coming back from them that needs replacing.

Lot of goalies/players go through things lke new teams, changes on teams, have gone through covid years as well, etc No excuses.

The previous two seasons (Covid + right after Covid) have been the highest scoring since 1993-94. (3.14 and 3.18 goals per game)
It’s getting harder and harder to play the position.
Markstrom is reliably a very good goalie, who puts up very good numbers on frequently awful teams. This year is no exception.
Adin Hill, Darcy Keumper, Jordan Binnington, Matt Murray - they’ve all won Stanley Cups - Markstrom is at least as capable as any of those guys.
All for a minimal commitment in terms of years and real dollars.

The thing about retention is this has always been a cap team. So its not like the owner is cheap. We are not going to overspend that money somewhere else.
I wonder if the extra season of retention is the hold up that management thinks it has more value, and New Jersey may not see it the same way.

I would easily pay extra money for like an "NHL All Access" subscription where I got access to all discussed trade proposals and offers that GMs discuss.
Just let me skim through Craig Conroy's emails to other GMs.

They're probably just sending memes and cat gifs back and forth just like everybody else.

I would love to see the emails or texts from Darryls time as a GM.
After seeing those leaked texts from Vince McMahon texting like he is a 14 year old, it would be hilarious to see others.

Nobody would be surprised Markstrom has another off season next year and we're begging to get rid of him.
The fortunes of this team would change dramatically by adding a package anywhere close to that for an asset you thought 8 months ago was a liability.
|
This the Flames we’re talking about. We’ll hang onto Markstrom, he’ll come back to earth next season, and we’ll deal him the following offseason for a 2nd and a 4th.

No. They’ll somehow pay to dump him with one year left lol

I don’t think they’re cheap so much as they’re not willing to spend extra to allow a GM to buy his way out of his own mistakes.

If that was the case then the Flames wouldn’t buy out players. I think it is more that Edwards doesn’t like paying a player to suit up for another team or something.

We bought out players.
This is also Conroy trying to do what is best for the team, not him correcting a mistake he made.
In fact this trade would be very beneficial for the franchise going forward.

Again, I think this is all just posturing...... I'd be willing to bet a trade gets done.

My friend's dad is friends with people in management and said both Markstrom and Hanifin were talked about for NJ
Holtz, Mercer, Siegenthaler were all names they discussed as well as Vanacek
So if their were to be a trade I feel like some combination of these players would come back if a deal were to be done

Brouwer and Raymond had no value when they were bought out.
If they could’ve been traded, they would’ve been.
