You are splitting hairs. The game is still happening is 4 seconds. So if Kessler shoots it before the horn the Flames should not react?
Rielly's mistake was he didn't drop his stick first and that he should be suspended heavily (he'll get 2 games).
Can someone find the PGT for that Flames-Ducks game? That would be an interesting read today.

His mistake was blindsiding Greig and cross checking him in the face. You showed a video where Wideman squared up with Kesler and rag dolled him. They are two completely different plays.

Yes they are. Read from the beginning.

The important difference is the Flames reaction, engaged Kesler, but was not dangerous. Flames gave him a very light rub into the boards (basically didn’t touch him) which provoked the fight. If you’re an old school hockey advocate (not that we can’t debate whether that should be a thing) how the Flames handled it was legit. Take exception and engage, the ducks were more than willing to oblige also.
The Flames didn’t, cross check to the face, devastating elbow to the head to take exception. That is the biggest issue here and what is different. The Leafs have the right to react, sure, they don’t have the right to administer a potentially devastating head shot to an unsuspecting player because their pride got hurt. That shouldn’t even be a debate.

Sorry but there is no excuse for what Reilly did, bull##### code or no code. If you don't like it, maybe don't lose to the lowly Sens. Maybe you should be more pi$$ed at your own performance first.

What are you talking about? Someone posted a similar situation and the result. Yes the outcomes were different. What’s your point? No one said it was the same as the cross check.
And yes, lots of people are unhappy that there was any response.

Someone posted something that is totally different and has almost no similarities. Cleveland Steam Whistle points this out very well a couple posts up but his analysis is pretty much bang on. Outside of someone shooting a puck the two situations have almost no similarities.

We'll see. There's been no announcement of an in-person hearing yet.

The NHL is so wildly inconsistent on suspensions whatever they decide doesn't really settle the debate either way

I feel like Girly and Cecil are viewing this from an alternate universe or something. Simply bizarre takes. Even the NHL has decided it’s worthy of 5+ and you know they didn’t want to do that to the Leafs. The League needs the Leafs in the playoffs.

DoPS decisions rarely do. Fact of the matter is that these types of plays will generate a response from the opposition. Reilly overreacted and deserves a suspension.
I guess people can argue whether the opposition should care enough to respond at all but fans debating it won’t change the fact that players care and have always cared. I’m kinda glad the guy did it because that Toronto Ottawa rivalry was feeling pretty tame recently. This should add some hatred.

Finding a video from 10 years ago that is sort of the same doesn't change the fact that it's now 2024 and these things aren't handled the same.
Rasmus Andersson would never been suspended for hitting Laine late in a game 10 years ago.
Now it's four games.
He gets 6-8 games in my mind.
