And the third was conditional upon the Avs winning the Cup and Kuemper playing at least half their games in the playoffs. A condition that had a very low likelihood of paying off, but one that Colorado was more than happy to pay when it did.

I would strongly argue that Timmins had that pedigree when traded.
Particularly with how the value of goalies has shifted, and the fact that teams have done well without a premium netminder, that you would be hard pressed to get that return.
Which may mean you just keep him and that makes sense.
I am rather surprised that several teams, who are young and trying to compete, are allowing goaltending to be the thing that is, or could, undermine their aspirations.

I'm probably in the minor on this but I'm still intrigued what the ask would be to get Zegras. He's a true buy low candidate and still young, had back to back 60+ seasons. I think he can fit in our system and adds even more skill.

I think it is because the cycle of copying has moved to getting cheap goalies vs having a Vasilevsky

This. It’s shifted to having 2 or even 3 goalies in the system that you think at least one will be on a hot streak during playoffs instead of betting it all on one guy that’s usually a consistent #1.

I don’t think Anaheim agrees that he is a buy low candidate though. They’d want a haul for him I think. He’s only 22 and notwithstanding his unhappy coach this season they’ve surely been happy with him so far.
They are a bad team.

Agreed...in a copycat league you have guys like Hill, Kuemper and Binnington who have backstopped teams to SC wins in recent years.
Then you add in seasons like Markstrom last year and Shesterkin this year and teams wonder if they should invert heavily in any single goaltender.
On the flip side you have Vasilevsky and even Bobrovski. Markstrom is playing vezina level this season.
They really are voodoo.

You definitely keep him if you cannot get a package similar to Kuemper in my opinion. If the package is like the Fleury package last year and it is just a 2nd that can turn into a 1st I would rather keep Markstrom and buyout Vladar in the offseason or retain 50% on Vladar for a 4th rounder or something.

I keep coming back to that Montreal pick and setting up next year.
Markstrom only has two years left and the Flames will be out of the playoffs in both.
I may take a lesser package to keep Markstrom from driving Calgary's pick out of the top ten next year as long as it has a good futures add for the team.

Was thinking I would check in on the forum this morning to find either another big trade or a Hanifin signing after all the smoke about Conroy in New Jersey last night. That Lindholm trade was so great it has me wanting more.

Yeah, Flames have to be bottom ten and have confidence in Florida not getting a top ten pick. Do they wait too see who Florida has re-signed before making more decisions

Multiple teams are very interested, Calgary up until this point wasn’t stoking the flames for a trade but according to the same source this may have changed late yesterday evening.
One name to follow is Andrew Mangiapane…

So Noah said he wants to move on? Not sure why a team would be interested in mangiapane with his cap hit? Granted I have no problems with flames trading him.

Hmmm…wonder if Hanifin + Mangiapane was the D+F combo we heard about in the Leafs rumours. Not sure how they’d fit that under the cap…

This.
I hate tanking, but next year is the one year where they really need to.
If the Flames finish 11-20, the Habs get the Flames pick. If the Flames finish bottom 10, the Habs get the FLA pick. HUGE difference - if the Flames don't get into the top 10, our pick next year will be in the 20-32 range.
Tank next year, get atop 10 pick, then get back to the business of trying to be good.

I think if you remove Toffoli, Lindholm, Zadorov, Hanifin, Tanev and Markstrom you don't have to tank.
Just show up and play the games.
But keeping Markstrom is a wild card that could mean the difference between being 9th and 11th in the draft order.

It’ll actually be a really good teaching season next year with the youth movement in full effect.
Potential full-timers
Pelletier
Pospisl
Coronato
Zary
Wolf
Pachal
That’s a ton of full time youth getting injected into the lineup with a lot more that will be pushing as well. They’ll need to learn how to win, perfect time for a fun season where we still finish bottom 10.
