Yup seeing a bunch more little mistakes by Tanev lately.

This is absolutely the right move.
Wrestle a 1st out of Toronto, watch them get eliminated in round 1, then sign the player back to your team.
It's exactly what Treliving deserves.

I would also be willing to pay as much as $5M for him on a one-year deal. Then trade him again next deadline.

Considering how the uncertainty affected Lindholm, it's not out of the question that Tanev isn't 100% mentally right now either.
I think he's been more than serviceable, and still a warrior on the ice.

these are the kinda things the Flames should do with any extra cap space..."overpay" decent players on short term deals. You either get assets at the deadline or who knows maybe lightning in a bottle.
Term is what the Flames absolutely can't do with older players

Really depends what the contract is IMO and if he wants to come back after being traded (think somebody said he's building a house here)
2 years @ $4M AAV...very little risk in something like that.
I highly doubt he gets more than 2 years unless some team goes crazy, and then yeah you let him go.

Nobody can every question what a warrior he is, its just the Flames have so many amazing players...why aren't they very good lol? I think we have to admit some guys are over rated.

I think Ottawa is sitting there with a 4 year deal. I think that's what swings a guy like Tanev to sign there.
4 years, $16M.
It's free agency. It happens every Summer.

Let's see your list of "prevent" d-men you'd have on your blue line before him.
Probably isn't a long one.
His market value might be higher than it should be right now because of his reputation and the appeal of that for a playoff run but he's still a damn good middle pairing, stabilizing presence.

Sergachev was injured tonight in his first game back from injury. Looked pretty bad and he was stretchered off the ice.
They don't have any 1sts to trade, but the Lightning must be be desperate for a dman right now.
I wonder if Tanev could be had for their 2025 2nd and a good prospect like Howard, Gauthier, or Huuhtanen

Wow, they are in some dire straits on defense, and probably don't want to burn a year of Stamkos and Kucherov.
I'd almost feel bad for trying to fleece them of Howard and Huutaanen. Except that the puck was in.

Oof that’s a rough return. Especially if the Flames retain salary. Kaliyev is trending down. Granted, I know next to nothing about Dvorak other than looking at his hockey db page (which is pretty underwhelming) and a 2nd in 2025 is a 2nd in 2025. I hope to god the Flames are looking for a better return on Markstrom with 50% retained than a deal where the centre piece is Kaliyev coming back

Oh, I think we have plenty of good players that can contribute. We lack in top tier talent though which is why while they can play a pretty even game with basically anyone, the team has to play their tails off to actually beat a lot of opponents because again they lack the superstars to put them over the top.

The Markstrom package has to at least start with the Kuemper return IMO (two firsts and a third). That was what Colorado gave up for a 4.5 million dollar a year goalie. The return on a trade cannot be “we will suck and get a higher draft pick”. That just makes absolutely no sense, keep the guy if that is all you are getting back.

The coyotes did not get two first round picks.
It was a first, a prospect and a third. The prospect was a former 2nd round pick.

The prospect was picked 32nd overall, so a former 1st round pick if the pick was made today. But I would say that is the floor for Markstrom, a 1st, a 3rd and a prospect who is a former 1st or has that pedigree.

Markstrom (1 million retained)
for
Mercer, Vanecek
NJ giving up a major young piece but Markstrom instantly fixes their biggest problem. They probably won't have the balls to do it though.

Doubtful he would sign anything shorter than 2 years and may want 3 to go anywhere.
Married with a young family, he will want some certainty and stability.
