That's a good return, but a 5'9" defenseman doesn't excite me. How about Cam Squires instead? Or better yet, Lenni Hameenaho

I like a Mercer, but I think he is being a bit overrated. A signed Hanifin straight across for Mercer is not a good deal.

I disagree. Flames are trading and expiring asset who doesn't want to be here for a young cost controlled RHS center. I can fully see a deal like that being 1 for 1.

He's still a middle six forward at this stage.
A #3 minute eating d-man with foot speed is the more valuable piece straight across, especially if extended.
I'll take the 1st as well, thank you.

If Hanifin is going to NJ signed and traded, he is worth far more than Mercer who is an upcoming RFA.

Mercer is also having a down year of his own.
But I love me another one of those buy low moves!
If they trade Hanifin I wouldn't be opposed to extending Tanev. Have to keep some reliable NHL players on your blue line. Especially the type that can mentor the younger players to use their faces to block slapshots.

If Hanafin goes to Jersey, I would temper expectations about Mercer. He is too important to their team.
I think that Holtz would be part of any return, and it wouldn't surprise me too much to see a couple of unexpected names headed one way or the other.

Turcotte has dealt with injuries since he turned pro, and this is his first full healthy year. I think that his is a player that wouldn't even be on the table if he wasn't hindered by injury in the past, suppressing his counting numbers.
I also think that PLD doesn't go to LA if Turcotte had been healthy.

I’m still holding out hope that Tanev gets dealt to a contender and then returns this summer as a mentor. “Negotiate” up until the deadline for a number he’d like this summer and then move him for a good faith cup run

I feel like there might be a decent chance, especially if he doesn't ultimately land in Vancouver as I think that might be one place he would re-sign.
I'd be all for it!

Not gonna lie I think Tanev's game is starting to slip...he could be huge for a playoff run but I'm not sure how many years I would give him

Didn't someone post here that he and his wife were in the midst of building a house here? You don't do that as a pending UFA if you aren't thinking about re-upping.

NJ trading for Hanifin without an extension is super risky. They're 5 points out of a wildcard spot with 2 games in hand and 2 teams ahead of them gunning for that same wild card spot.
Giving up a 1st and 2x 2nds or equal for Hanifin as a rental isn't something I see NJ doing in their current position. If an extension is in place it is much more likely and the haul should be greater as well.

I think some cracks are starting to emerge in his game, for sure.
None the less, I would still love to sign him in the summer for a reasonable number, like $3M. I would be good with 3 X $3m or 2 X $3.5-$4

One regulation win over Philly and they are effectively tied for 3rd (3 back with 3 games in hand)

I actually think Tanev’s game is better this year than last year (but not as good as when he got here).

I agree.
I think it's time to let him go off and battle for a Cup while we get a good return, and then let him sign his retirement contract elsewhere. Don't circle back. Dude has been a great Flame for his 3.6 years and that's a clear W for the organization.
