Not saying that he will or will not sign, but wasn't there a rumor that he was ready to sign and it was the Flames that actually paused talks?

I think it was reported the deal was done but he backed out when it was time to sign.
Pretty sure it was reported to be 8 years and 7.5 per season.

I'm good either way
They already banked and Lindholm and will do the same with Tanev
I don't think the Flames are gonna suck for 5 years, I think Conroy knows what he is doing. Every deal he is getting assets plus a player just as good it seems and clearing major cap space.

Conroy said the plan all along was to trade Lindholm, they just waited to get the best deal possible, and they had an ask that even with his poor play they didn't deviate from.

similarly, I think he's set the price on Tanev. First one to blink and pay that 1st gets him. Hanifin's been more of a "will he, won't he" situation, but I'm sure Conroy is well prepared for both scenarios. If anything, the Lindholm deal has shown he a) knows what he wants and b) is patient enough to wait for it.

Yup he said they had models or something already prepared, had packages they want for everyone already mocked up on the board. He said Chris Snow provided him with all these details.
Sometimes sitting still and not being the one to initiate everything works out best. I think everyone knows that we have the best pieces on the market right now.
Let some team jump the gun and pay an extra pick or better prospect.

Adam Henrique's name is all over the radio here in California now. Multiple teams have already inquired on him.

Hanifin is young enough to consider it, but I'd still prefer to get future assets in. I would just absolutely love to enter the draft weekend with as many picks as possible ... not just to make selections, but because they could be great currency too. Just imagine going into the draft with four 1sts (the two we have plus one each for Tanev and Hanifin), or three with additional 2nds. Maybe they could use one or two of those picks to add a young player (I still see you, David Jiricek).

to be fair, Henrique is probably the best center left by a mile, with Lindholm and Monahan gone. Who else is there? Nic Dowd? Woof.

Henrique is a solid player for someone looking for a 3rd line center type of player. He wouldn't go into teams in a top 6 role. And the acquisition cost would be much lower. Henrique has 33 points this year on an awful Ducks team (Lindholm had 32 in the same amount of games played: 49). Lindholm is the better player and nobody would argue that but Henrique would be acquired for a 3rd line center role by a team, not a top 6 spot.

I think we can conclude what the plan is with Hanifin in fairly short order. If he wants to sign, it really shouldn't take long - like maybe a week or two. But if he doesn't, it will be radio silence until trade talks heat up, which could be a while yet.
tl/dr: if nothing in a week or so, assume a trade is coming.

If what Conroy said is true and they’re literally ‘all ears’ on pretty much anything imagine what a guy like Backs would command. I know I know, he won’t get traded this year and I agree with that sentiment… but man, he could command a kings ransom if he was available with how thin the market is at center.

Taking a while to get to 5000

^ Even if it appears the Flames are done if/when they move Hanifin & Tanev, yeah, the actual trade deadline day could produce a few surprises.

See, I'm not worried about the Flames Sucking for 5 years... I'm worried that they continue their perpetual mediocreness. I want the Flames to legitimately strive for greatness, to be a new dynasty. I'm sick of the team seemingly largely being satisfied with "just getting in".

He did say that the goal is to open the new arena with a competitive team.
So I don't think anything is off the table in terms of trades, and trading picks to get young players as soon as this draft.
People won't be spending $200 on nosebleed tickets to watch a bottom feeder.

It's probably part of the strategy of making your moves early.
Get the work done on the obvious guys early (Lindholm, Hanifin, Tanev), and then you never know if when the deadline comes somebody gets desperate and you get better return on a Mangiapane or Markstrom and pull the trigger there too.

Conroy mentioned Boston in passing during his BarnBurner interview this week as a franchise to "look at". Which makes sense as Iginla was in that organization at one point.
I'm more than fine with a Boston model.
