There’s literally no reason to take on PLD and the nightmare that he is for locker rooms. People saying do the trade and flip PLD at the TDL… to who? He’s proven that he’s not a team guy time and again and I think it’s hilarious to even consider flipping a player in Huby who’s already proven to be a solid guy in the community and despite fan frustration (understandably) seems to be well liked in the room as well. We haven’t even seen Huby/Pelletier yet this year! Like it or lump it we are stuck with Huby strictly because that contract is dastardly… but the PLD contract is horrendous, which in my opinion, is far worse than dastardly lol.

Sec, Dissentowner any word on what Noah is going to do now that the all star break is over with? I thought I read that the flames basically gave him an ultimatum to make the decision?

there's no Huberdeau trade scenario out there that doesn't sink the Flames anyway, so I think it's moot. Expensive long-term contract while he's underperforming ... you're talking about sacrificing significant futures (remember, we paid a 1st to get one year of Monahan off the books) and/or taking on other terrible contracts. And for what? We're not going anywhere the next couple of years, with or without Huberdeau. Cap is not going to be a factor either, with Hanifin and Tanev coming off the books. Huberdeau is staying, whether you like it or not. Best hope is he can find another gear at some point, and like I said, I'm still confident he can.

Huberdeau will have another PPG season but I bet it's because someone carries him there.
His contract is terrible and will go down as the worst in flames history.
I am excited for that player to emerge that is able to carry him to a PPG though!
Can't wait for this new chapter of the flames to start.
PLD is toxic. The only reason you trade Huberdeau for him is because it's a more tolerable buyout.

Of the 5 he was the one I wanted to extend most because of position and age, I think Hanifin is underrated quite a bit, but his talents don’t trump the assets he’ll command IMO. It would be the prudent decision to trade him and I’ll be happy if we do though to that point I’ll understand if we extend him and won’t be sad about it.

He hasn't signed yet and the word from Friedman etc is that they wanted an answer over the All Star break. My guess is there was nothing that would change his mind over the last week.

Still hoping that what Friedman suggested before the All Star break is true… the flames asked Hanifin to make in his decision by the time he came back from the break. Not that I want his answer to be leaked since that could only weaken Conroy’s trade position if it turns out everyone knows he is going to trade Hanifin.

I think he's gone. Hanifin is arguably the top guy in the list for UFA defensemen when you balance everything out. If he hasn't signed by now, why would he considering what the team has lost and is likely to lose toward the deadline? What's the benefit to him to sign right now?

I think people need to be patient. A lot of has been said that Conroy has no plan, or they don't know what they are doing.
He said he knew Lindholm would be traded back in September. They just waited to get the best deal, and Vancouver seems like they panicked a bit and sent us the best offer.
He said they have a plan. Getting upset someone isn't traded when you want it isn't fair to the team and Conroy.

If Hanifin does leave, I could see him going to Boston. Sweeney has been interested in him since he was drafted, Hanifin is from the area and Boston has cap space next season with some defenseman coming off the books. Boston is also in win now mode. Hanifin's wait and see approach was reported to be because he wanted to see what the Flames would do this year/look like.

The benefit in theory is that you are one injury away from a personal major disaster financially.

If I had to bet, I would have put my money on him signing (until a few days ago). But now that Lindholm is actually gone, and with the incessant Tanev talk, you have to think that makes him more inclined to decide to move on.

Him signing now would be a bit concerning about if his motive is strictly money.
Outside of money, we don't have much to offer in terms of winning anytime soon. So does he actually want to be a leader and help turn this thing around, or just take a sure payday, and maybe ask out afterwards?

I don't really see the rush in dealing with Huberdeau. If anything his contract gets less awful over time, as it gets shorter. It'd be one thing if the Flames were competitors and Huberdeau was eating up cap space. That's pretty far from the truth right now though.
Maybe the owners will learn from their mistakes, writing a $10 million dollar pay cheque to a bum while the team is rebuilding. It might also prevent the owners from going all Vancouver and signing a bunch of bad veteran UFAs during their rebuild.
Best bet is to jus leave Huberdeau be. The Flames are not competing for another 3 years, as least. The Flames need to fill cap until then. By the time they are, you can look at moving Huberdeau then. With cap inflation and a mild bounce back, to 70+ points, Huberdeau may not look so bad in 4 years. That may be what the standard 70-80 point winger goes for in 4 years.

I like Noah, but I won't be sad one bit if he forces the Flames's hands here. Gimme all those juicy future assets.

Where have you been?
Before the trade a lot of people seemed to think the Flames had no idea what direction to go with Lindholm, or the other UFA. If they didn't get traded back in November well we had no plan.
Some people felt he wouldn't return much more than 2nd rounder and a B level prospect.
Conroy said the plan all along was to trade Lindholm, they just waited to get the best deal possible, and they had an ask that even with his poor play they didn't deviate from.
