Octavia Sperati - Moonlit

off their new album, Grace Submerged. all female band, they play a heavy-but-clean brand of doom metal and have picked up a thick Black Sabbath influence for their sophmore album. oh and the vocals are incredible, the singer is one of the best female vocalists i've ever heard from any metal/rock band

EDIT: well they were all female, they seemed to have picked up a new drummer. but 5/6ths is close enough

Never heard of Octavia Sperati before, but judging from this one song - these girls are awesome. Just hope the vocalist doesnt get influenced by Ozzy's "singing" too much

Great find.

So I'm guessing you dig Lacuna Coil. I have their latest CD and it's growing on me.

If you dig good female vocalists, give Tori Amos a try. Not metal of course, but she's a fantastic performer with a haunting voice. I'd recommend starting with her early stuff. Boys For Pele would be a great one to start with and then you can work in either direction chronologically if you like it.

I'd also recommend early Heart. Ann Wilson kicks ass.

Thanks for the Holly McNarland info, had no idea she was working on a new album all this time. Hopefully she rolls through town soon.

Lacuna Coil tried to cash in too hard on their latest album for my tastes. their best is still Comalies. if you want more stuff like that, here's a small sample of a few of the bands i'm into

Nightwish

Blackmore's Night

Within Temptation

Jakalope (she is so incredibly hot)

and one of my all time favorites, kidneythieves

Kamelot - Ghost Opera

another new metal release (man has 2007 been an awesome year so far), this one by one of the best power/traditional metal acts around. their 2005 release The Black Halo won numerous "Album of The Year" awards and this one seems to be just as strong

Just listened to a really good release from a band called Red. Sort of a Three Days Grace sound for the most part, although you can definitely hear some Linkin Park influences. Really strong disk. Interestingly, they are a Christian band, but aren't really obvious in any shape or form.

It's pretty much the Cranberries. Not surprising as her voice is distinctive and she was the main contributing songwriter to the band. So it has some nice mellow songs, some pop songs, songs with a bit of grit and some songs that can only be discribed as different. Her voice is great as always.

Read on interview where she said they are looking at reuniting for atleast a tour.

Within Temptation - The Howling

the video is a game trailer/music video from their new album The Heart of Everything. these guys are one of the original female fronted goth rock bands, getting their start way back in '96. and to put it bluntly, this is the band that Evanescence stole their sound from. to me the original always sounds better

I've been listening to them for about 6 months, last I read they were touring with Three Days Grace, I found only on a few songs could you hear the LP influence but for the most part a solid disc, I was more impressed with their slower songs than their faster ones, Already Over pt.2 is a very good song.

Dude, I like 99% of your music, but come on now you are really reaching. Evanescence is a WT rip off? And Lacuna Coil steals from Evanescence, huh? That's BS. Evanescence is much better than WT, Sharon can't hold a candle to Amy and I am a HUGE Within Temptation fan.

In other news, Nightwish new song Eva is out, with their new lead singer Anette Olzon. The song is allright IMO, but I expected more. Also, Anette needs to prove her voice is much stronger than she has shown in this song and that she can sing with an edge. Otherwise she has no chance of replacing Tarja.

Amy Lee's vocal range can't even compare to her contemporaries, if you listen to either of the Mother Earth or Silent Force albums Sharon den Adel blows her away. and where did i ever say that Lacuna Coil stole from Evanescence? if anything it's the other way around, with Lacuna being around much longer

all Evanescence did was take a sound that was popular in Europe, gloss it up and package it in an easy to digest format for American audiences. they're the Nickelback of goth rock, just with a less ugly vocalist

To be honest, I really like this CD, having said that, it would have to take a lot for me not to like a CD that LP makes. You can tell they are trying something totally different for them and I think you have to give them credit. A big knock on Linkin was that their earlier stuff sounded the same, you can't say that about Minutes to Midnight. You may not like it, fine, but don't tell me that it sounds the same as their old stuff.

After all that, I think that this is easily my least favorite of the three major releases.
A bit late and a bit of a bump, but I DL'd Linkin Park's album and I have to say that it was a bit of a disappointment. There's not much recycling from their last albums but their new stuff was pretty disappointing. Best tracks I liked were: Given Up, Leave Out The Rest (the boyband influences make it catchy), Bleed It Out and What I've Done. Aside from that, the album was not worth the bandwidth.

I thought this album was really really well done. I'm not a fan of them, but it was pretty funky with maybe one or two tracks being bad (but far from terrible). An absolute solid album from start to finish for sure.

I have complete discographies of all 3 bands, and I just can’t see how you can say that Sharon blows her away, if anything, the consensus among fans seems to be that Sharon’s singing (live) is the weakest link for Within Temptation.

Lacuna Coil (known as Ethereal back then) was established by Marco Coti-Zelati and Andrea Ferro in 1994. Amy Lee teamed up with Ben Moody in 1994. Both Evanescence and Lacuna Coil released their first EPs in 1998. So I don’t see how you can say that LC has been around much longer. Not to mention both bands (and that goes for WT too) were known only locally for years.

The only major pre-Fallen releases with international success were Comalies and Mother Earth (Silent Force was released in 2004). I would really love to hear which Fallen song is stealing from which Comalies/Mother Earth song. All three bands sound similar, well maybe because all three bands are female fronted gothic rock bands. But no one is stealing from someone else. That is just bitter talk considering Evanescence enjoys more success than WT and LC combined. And again - I love all 3 bands so I am dissing no one.

PS. Previous albums like The Dance or HalfLife were simply not popular when they were released, so that leaves us only with Comalies and Mother Earth.

I checked it out last night, some of the stuff was more upbeat than I was expecting, but wow was it ever good. Why did he have to stab himself? He made such wonderful music.

He is by far one of my faves. There is some "discussion" I guess on the whole stabbing thing....apparently it could've been his girlfriend or something. Not many people stab themselves...pretty difficult to do!

A little off-topic, but did anyone see Austin City Limits on PBS HD last night?

Flaming Lips and the Shins? What a great performance - I'd love to see the Flaming Lips live. They were even joined by guest Chan Marshall (Cat Power) to do Sabbath's War pigs.

HDNet is great too for live performances, and the show True Music has interesting acts.

On a side note, I think I'm going to marry Cat Power.
