What about this trade? It works both sides as far as I can tell from a cap perspective.
2024 1st (top 10 protected. Currently 12th OA) + Holtz + Bahl + Vaneck for Hanifin (signed 7.5x8) + Markstrom
|
I like Holtz too but I don't think the Flames want another winger, they need a guy down the middle. think it would have to be Hanifin and Markstrom for Vaneck, 2024 1st, Mercer.

I would be ok with this even without Casey.

Yeah agreed, just wondered with the retention on Markstrom if you might be able to get Casey as well. Markstrom at $4MM is good value for next couple years and the addition of Hanifin solidifies their defense long term when Hamilton returns.
The Flames would add two great prospects and a 1st, would be a great trade. Since I like it so much it is likely highly unrealistic and loaded in the Flames favor.

Since Brad and the Leafs want Tanev so bad and aren’t willing to give up their 2024 1st what about the following,
To TOR
Tanev ($1MM retained)
To CGY
Cowan
2024 3rd (from NYI)
Domi (if the waived his trade clause)

I can't see Domi leaving Toronto. I would be fine with Cowan alone or just their 2024 1st. I don't think you get more than that for Tanev.

Yeah he may not, but Brad has to move money to add Tanev so he is in a bit of a pinch. They already have a razor thin blueline so sending Brodie back makes little sense. It’s going to be difficult for Toronto to add anything.

Serivali keeps saying Tanev is only worth a 2nd or a conditional 2nd that can change into a 1st if a team goes deep. I feel like if that is what the Flames wanted they could have made that deal weeks ago.

No freebies for Toronto 1st plus a prospect. Stay on the consistent messaging. TO infact should pay more.

I heard Van offered their 25 2nd but the Flames wanted their 1st and that is where it ended

I really don't see Mercer being traded.
He's a become a big part of their forward core being 3rd in all forwards in ATOI behind only hughes and hischer.
They have more then enough cap space to give him a big raise next year.

I'd be okay with Tanev for Minten and the 3rd the Leafs own from the Islanders. Flames get a good center prospect and a decent draft pick. Seems doable.

I think its a fair trade. I wouldn't view it as a homerun though.
I'd take a late first if given the choice.

Topi Niemela + Isles 3rd ‘24 + Leafs 2nd ‘27 + Samsonov

I don't think the Leafs are interested in moving Samsonov now.

I could see Jersey wanting Markstrom, but I feel like Hanifin would be less important to them. They already have some decent D options/prospects between Hughes, Nemec, Casey, Bahl, and of course Hamilton. They could likely chase Hanifin in the summer if they wanted. There are some other UFA options that would cost them nothing but cap space as well. Seeing this year is kind of a write off for them due to injury and bad goaltending, I'm not sure Hanifin would be a priority for them right now.

A bit of a weird take, but I think the Flames should sign Kessel. I know Phil wants to get another run at the playoffs, but he could be a good fit around some of the Flames young guys as well. I'm sure he'd have plenty of pointers for the likes of Zary, and Shara.
Quote:
“I want to play,” Kessel said. “I have the desire. I love to play the game still.
“Obviously, I don’t feel old or anything like that. So, you know, I enjoy playing every game, and I’m looking forward to next year, wherever I’m at, and continuing my career.”
"I know he's been working out and skating and hoping for a job here soon. He's just an unbelievable teammate, one of the best guys that I've played with, just in terms of the locker room and how he treats people. He's always in a good mood. I'm really hoping that he can get a job here soon." -Keller

I'd rather the Flames keep selling off their assets individually.
Tanev, Markstrom and Hanifin would all return more on their own IMO

I can't imagine why he would want to come here.

The only reason he'd want to come here is if no other playoff team wants him. He said he still loves the game, so playing for the Flames is better than not playing at all.
I liked having Jagr here, and I think that having Kessel here for a stretch would be pretty awesome as well.
