I just still can't see the Devils moving Mercer. He has the 3rd biggest role of their forwards behind only Hughes and Hischier.
I'd be happy to be wrong though.
I still think Holtz is a good target, and I also love the idea of that American D prospect Seamus Casey, providing he's willing to sign an ELC as soon as his college season is done.

Sure but there are several issues with proposing Hanifin to Florida right now. They don't have the space and would have to send a contract back and I don't know who that would be. Secondly Lundell is their 3C and on an ELC which they desperately need. Third, defense isn't a big need for them, if it's a need at all frankly. They don't have much assets to begin with and whatever they have I'd imagine they would spend on a middle six winger.
As a free agent Hanifin could be of interest, if for some reason Montour doesn't get signed (I'll eat a shoe if they don't re-sign Forsling).

Thing with the Devils is they have top 10 expected goals for stats, top 10 expected goals against stats, but are second last in the league for goals against above expected. None of the goaltenders in their system look good this year, and would be a risky bet for them just to hope one of them turns it around next year. You would have to think if the Flames retained on Markstorm, that would be a pretty attractive option for the next few years while they continue to let their younger goaltenders develop. Would at least give them hope of making a couple playoff runs while they still have a bunch of players on ELCs.

I don't even think the Flames need to retain on Markstrom, especially with the Devils. Just take Vanacek back in the deal.
Gives the Flames another bounce back candidate to maybe flip down the road, just like Sharangovich (who has bounced back) and now Kuzmenko.

How do you come to that conclusion? More next year doesn't mean negative this year.

There will also be a #### ton of free agent veteran Dmen who will be looking for jobs and the Flames will have cap space to hand out a pillow contract or two, and also be able to flip said Dmen to contenders at the deadline which can be appealing to these types.
Someone like Kulikov for example, "here is $5 million for one year, lots of ice time" and then everyone and their dog knows the Flames will be looking to sell at the deadline so he gets to finish the season on a legit contender chasing a cup.

Yes, this is exactly what the Flames should be doing for the next couple years - sign one or two year deals with free agents, and then flip them at the deadline for picks.
IMO, this is a much more palatable way to use cap space. And once you trade them at the deadline, you regain the cap space in order to retain on outgoing players. Then repeat in the summer.

There's not much for quality UFA goaltenders this offseason either.
What about this trade? It works both sides as far as I can tell from a cap perspective.
2024 1st (top 10 protected. Currently 12th OA) + Holtz + Bahl + Vaneck for Hanifin (signed 7.5x8) + Markstrom

It’s a win win situation for everyone involved.
We get a player. They get paid. Whoever gets them at the deadline pays draft picks as a price and not a full cap hit or salary.
Just hope we are not handing out long term deals. Forsling would be someone to sign long term maybe

Mercer is due a new contract next season and the amount he is likely to get will be high for a 3C. It may be one of those situations where cap allocation through their roster provides the impetus for moving a player they'd like to keep but they should/could be spending those dollars more wisely elsewhere in the lineup.

I'm looking at Florida for a deal involving Hanifin. Maybe Hanifin with an extension for Montour, Lundell and Sawchyn.
Then I'm looking at NJ for a deal involving Markstrom. For Casey, Holtz and 1st.

There are plenty of Gilbert’s and the like out there, just be thankful we don’t have a Gudbranson for a 4x4 or Zadorov at 5x5
Sometimes a Mackey type is actually worth more than is shown

Hanifin is not a big enough upgrade over Montour for them to give up all that

Switch Holtz for Mercer and Bahl for Casey and retain $2MM on Markstrom.
